I'm taking my best friend out for a fancy dinner for her birthday, and I've decided to do the "corkage fee" option. A cabernet or pinot preferably. Thanks!

You'll be hard pressed to find a "good" pinot at that price. The better ones start at about $35. Archery Summit Cuvee and Domaine Drouhin Willamette Valley are prime examples.

The only two cabs I could recommend, because I personally drink them, would be:

Casillero del Diablo Cabernet (Concha Y Toro). This was a 'best value' wine in Wine Spectator and has been voted best value by a tons of other publications. I HIGHLY recommend this wine for this price range. It drinks better than some $30 cabs I've had. Really.

Amberhill Cabernet (Raymond). This is consistantly a good and drinkable wine. My local Trader Joe's carries it for under $10.

You may also want to try a blend of some variety. Six Prong Red and House Red are both good values. Both are VERY drinkable and fun. They are under $15, possibly under $10.

Cheap cabs are often too bitter, dry, and unpalatable. Be very careful about this.

Also, I'm not sure about this 'corkage fee' option. Generally, corkage fees are $15-$20 and are ideal for pricier or 'special' wines. If it's a 'fancy' dinner, a $10 bottle of wine may not match too well...

Good luck to you and have fun!

Torres Sangre de Toro is a real nice Spanish wine that usually sells for around $6-7. If you're in Texas, you might try Becker Iconolcast Cabernet Sauvignon.

I've found that many reds from Chile can be purchased at a very affordable price, and have great tastes too.

Two reds that I really like for around $10 are:

Concha y Toro - Frontera - Merlot (or Cabernet Sauvignon)
and
2001 Tarapaca Casablanca Reserva Merlot

attempt: Marque de l. a. Concordia Rioja ($14) Darien Rioja ($10) Marques de Riscal Rioja ($sixteen) Ramon Bilbao Rioja ($15 for extra value-effective, as much as $60-eighty for high priced ones) surely, i could propose extremely larger cost, like $20-30 - gets much extra suited Spanish reds. Spanish wines are values wines with great high quality and great cost. additionally examine with Wine fanatic magazine September 2007 undertaking. there's a stable article on Spanish Rioja.

Columbia Crest, Grand Estates (not Two Vines) Cab.
Either 2001, or 2003 (2002= bad year 2000 is OK, but the more recent vintages are better). Right at $10 / btl.

Delicious!!!

I prefer the CC Merlots, myself, but the Cabs. are OK, too.
