I know you hear this all the time.. But I'm gonna ask anyway. I have this Dog at my house that is a rescue/foster until after the babies are ready. She is VERY pregnant, has milk, some clear discharge, I can feel the puppies rolling all around inside, her temp is at like 99.1 but it's been like that for a day or so. She seems to be okay just ready to pop at anytime. I've thought she was about to start labor any time for a couple days now(She's starting to get restless, not eating much, licking at her vulva every now and then, sometimes panting)and here she is still pregnant. I was just wondering how much longer this can go on, being that she is a small dog she seems ready to burst. Being that I don't know her usual actions I really have no idea if she's always this way or if she's really close to whelping?

I don't *think* she's in labor now. When she shows these symptoms it's intermittent. I just talked to my vet, he asked me to temp her again and it's now at 98.9. He says thats whelping range so she might start active labor at any time, he thinks she might be in early labor(or he said it could be another week lol). The only reason I'm worried about tonight in specific is that we had plans for the evening and I didn't want her to have to be alone if it might be tonight.(she's really stayed right by my side the last 48 hours, I can't even close my b/r door to go to sleep) I have an area for her already to birth in(however she keeps hiding under my coffee table). Other than the panting is there anything that will happen before she starts to push that I will *know for sure* that it's the real deal.

my Boarder collie was pregnant for 9 weeks and 2 days, (yes unfortunately we caught her in the act) 3 days before the puppies came she started milking from the nipples, the morning she went into labor she was panting very hard all morning, and drooling alot, I brought her out to go to the bathroom, and she peed and when she came in, she kept trying to squat like she might go to the bathroom again, I had her birthing spot all set, but because of the close relationship she and I have always had, she wouldn't go in without me, so we went in, and within 20 mins of me sitting in the room with her, she started to crown the first pup.
It can take up to 2 hours in- between births, so don't be surprised if you think she's done and then there are more. Also, as with some human mothers it's not uncommon for her to poop while in labor. You might want to keep water in her birthing stall, but she won't eat during the delivery process.
So I geuss my short version of an answer is about 3 days after the milk first squeezes out of her nipples, she will pant alot as labor increases, good luck and remember to put lots of papers or a blanket that you don't want to keep in for her and the pups.

It sounds like she is in labor now. She's already had the temp drop and usually pups arrive around 24 hours after that. The clear discharge is her mucus plug (being a child friendly forum, I won't post information about that but you can look it up). If you don't have puppies by tonight, take her to the vet for a quick check-up. She may have one stuck. Going now to avoid having the vet closed wouldn't be a bad idea, especially since you are unfamiliar with canine whelping.

To speed up the process, you can take her for a walk and see if that gets things moving. Take a towel with you. If you go at night, take a towel and flash light. Make sure she is on leash just in case she wants to wander into a den you didn't know about or she wants to take off and drop a pup where you can't or didn't see it.

BTW If she doesn't have a quiet, semi-dark place to have her pups, give her one. She may be a bit nervous because she doesn't have a whelping area that she feels secure in. If she has an area that she wants, let her have it. Some females will not eat or drink after delivering unless the food and water is right outside the whelping box. She may not be like that but I figured it was best you know now instead of having to worry about her later.

Any minute now. Congratulations cause here they come!!! Do you have a nice, warm, quiet, private area for her? That will make it easier for her and you can watch from a safe distance should she need your help (If it's her first litter).Good luck! : )

Look for puppies in the morning. They do it just fine, alone, don't ya' know. Some do not want to be watched.
