How about hiking in Verdugo hills above Glendale? They have a park on top of Grandview, with a restored Doctor's house there.

In Chinatown on the weekends the Heritage house on Bernard Street is open and they can give you some idea on places strange in Chinatown.

Believe it or not there is a hot springs in Los Angeles near Western and Beverly. Good luck in hearing more strange things in LA.

I was just thinking the same thing then I saw your post. Now that's weird!

There is a place I've heard of called Switzer Falls in the San Gabriel Mountains. I'm sure you can google directions.

Now's the time of year to get out to the desert and see the wildflowers or the poppies in bloom.

Consider Descanso Gardens, the Arboretum or the Japanese Gardens in the valley, although they aren't that weird.

You didn't mention Huntington Library. And don't forget our many historic sights, any of the missions, Leonis Adobe, Banning House, or Olvera Street.

There is a place in Sylmar called oddly enough, San Sylmar. It's a private museum that is owned by the guy that owns Merle Norman Cosmetics.

I saw something on TV about a company that will take you on a tour of LA's neon signs at night in a convertable. Best leave that for summer.

Personally, I think Hollywood Blvd or Venice are weird enough.

Your best bet, I think is to check the LA Times Calender Section or the LA Weekly frequently.

I just thought of another one:
the world's largest wistaria vine is in Sierra Madre. It's open the the public the last Sunday in March. They have a big festival. Read all about it here:

There are some very strange museums in L.A. Among the best known is the Peterson Automotive Museum on Wilshire. There's also a fascinating museum of neon downtown. In Hollywood you can check out the Erotic Museum and Museum of Death, and the L.A. Fire Museum, all of which are quite fascinating. Not offbeat, but very cool are the Hollywood History Museum and the Warner Brothers studio tour.

You might also head down to San Juan Capistrano and see the mission and the quaint old town. Go hiking out in the desert (Mojave National Preserve), which is beautiful in springtime. Go downtown and see where it all began at the El Pueblo historic site. You can also tour the San Antonio Winery in the industrial area just east of downtown.

You should get your hands on a book called "L.A. Bizarro" It will give you some good "odd" ideas.

Also, you can drive up the coast to San Simeon and get a tour of Hearst Castle...pretty incredible.

Speaking of Castles, you should find a way to go to The Magic Castle on Franklin Ave. You have to be invited, but if you do a little research, you might find a way to get in.

Santa Barbara is nice for walking around, shopping, dinner etc.

Santa Anita Race track in Arcadia is a great idea. The track is a beautiful art deco gem. You can sit in the restaurant, order some champagne and strawberries while you watch the races. Lotsd of fun!

Do a downtown bar crawl with a bunch of friends...Broadway Bar, Golden Gopher, Union..there are so many great bars downtown now...it's quite an adventure to walk to each of them too.

Take a tour of The Gamble House in Pasadena, then go to Old Town Pasadena to walk around and have some lunch.

Grandma Prisbey's Bottle Village in Simi Valley.

When I as a kid growing up there, Grandma Prisbey was just the crazy old lady who was building an eyesore of a house out of bottles, but it has become a landmark and it is definitely odd and interesting.

It was closed many years ago because it is not structurally sound, but I understand that you can get a private tour by appointment.

Definitely watch Huell Howser's show, California Gold. You'll get lots of ideas there - I once saw a show where he went to visit an old man who owned a bug-raising business. He had dozens of strange bugs, like madagascar hissing cockroaches, and centipedes and milllipedes he raised for movies & to feed wild animals at the zoo and playboy mansion.

One place that popped in my mind is Alpine Village. During October, they have the best Oktoberfest, but during the rest of the year it feels like a regular little German village.
