My husband, a subcontractor deals with this all the time and it has nearly put him out of business because people feel that he is not as important of a bill, but yet, he paid for gas, expenses, and labor to do the work.
What he would appreciate is if clients would tell him up front, not afterwards, that they are going to have difficulty paying him. Because he counts on that money to pay his bills. Because people were not honest with him, our family is hurting financially as well and that is not fair to our family.
For the sake of people like my husband, please call the subcontractor and work out payment arrangements. It is not fair to just not pay him, but if he is at least aware that you will make a sincere effort (and follow through) he may be willing to make payment arrangements. Because without that money coming in, he must make payment arrangements on his own bills.
Whatever you do, please don't just skate out of paying the bill, because it is not fair to the subcontractor just because you are short money.
If you don't make payment arrangments, and make sure you pay that amount by the agreed upon date, be very prepared to get a lien placed on your property. Because this is the subcontractor's livelihood and his family's.

You need to pay the subcontractor the amount specified in your agreement with him. He needs to put food on his table and pay his rent, and it is stealing to deny him payment for work done. Call him and set up a payment plan. That is the moral thing to do. Karma baby - treat others as you wish to be treated, or karma will bite you in the ***.

Talk to the subcontractor and see if there is a payment plan or something that can be worked out. They may be willing to work with you here, but it is up to them.

Call the sub and ask him for some mercy and tell him that you will pay as soon as things straighten out. The other resort is bankruptcy.

You obviously have to pay him. Work out a payment plan, but you can't not pay him. If you must file bankrupcy , than do so.
