My story is that I was at a friend's house one night, it was nearly 3am, I was on the opposite side of town, and I didn't have a ride home. I planned to stay out late, I even told my grandparents I wouldn't be coming home til morning. Unfortunately I didn't have the ride like I expected to have. Since I couldn't reach friends with rides to take me, I opted to just take a cab home. Once my grandfather found this out (he's way overprotective), he immediately started to flip out on me, and he threatened to call the authorities to get me if I wasn't home within an hour. I'm 20 years old, and he was threatening to tell the authorities that I was "in danger" at my friend's house when I was telling him that we were okay, just watching movies, and that I didn't get the ride like I expected.

My grandpa didn't call, I got home, but I was wondering if he has the right to call for police to get me, even when i'm 20 years old? Yeah, it was very ridiculous and unnecessary!

According to law in some states, even if you are over 18, if you still live in your parent's/guardian's house, you have to either obey their rules or move out. If they really believe that you are in danger, they can report you as a runaway and have the authorities bring you back if you are not home when they say you should be(even though it is a little extreme).

Sure they can call but the cops won't do anything you are an adult and therefore have to be missing for 24-48 hrs before they will do anything , key word MISSING. If your living under their roof you should abide by their rules, 3am to them is very very late and they were probably just scared for you.

he can call all he wants. if he uses the ploy that you are in trouble they will come. once they find out that it was only to get you home, they can ticket or charge him for making a false report. since you are over 18, in no actual danger or a missing person, they can't force you to go home.

No he can't do that...my mom tried doing that to me when I was 17...I wasn't living with her and I was out with an older guy...so she threatened to call the police..but they couldn't do anything because I didn't have a curfew.

You're 20 years old. What are you doing living with your grandparents? Don't you think it's time to get your own place? if you live with parents or grandparents, you have to follow their rules. They probably can't sleep if you're out all night. They worry that something is wrong if you're out too late. Your elderly grandparents shouldn't have to put up with this. No, they shouldn't be calling the cops, but you should respect their rules too.

no it's not right. he's just over protective. the police may or may not check on you but if they do all you have to do is tell them your ok and your not in any danger. there is nothing that the police can do but make sure that you arn't in any danger.

NO!! He can not do that........ but however they would come if he lied and said that you were younger..they would have to check it out. Be kind to him he obviously loves you........ Next time don't tell the entire truth................ tell him your friend is bringing you home so that he won't worry.

ACTUALLY EVEN IF YOU WERE UNDER 18 HE WOULD STILL NOT HAVE THE RIGHT. AND IF HE CALLED AND TOLD THEM YOU WERE IN DANGER AND YOU WEREN'T THEY WOULD CHARGE HIM WITH FILING A FALSE REPORT. HE HAS NO LEGAL RIGHT TO DO ANYTHING. AND ANYTHING HE DOES DO WILL PROBABLY GET HIMSELF INTO TROUBLE. IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE HES USING VERY GOOD JUDGEMENT SO FAR.
