The "Check Engine" light came on '03 Camry with 70k miles.... took it to dealer, they replaced a sensor for $400. The light came back on few days later. Took it back. They held it for 2 weeks but couldn't fix it so they gave up.

Since they couldn't fix it, asked for money back but they refused! How can they keep the money if they couldn't fix the problem?????

How do I get my money back from the scammers??????????

Took the car to another dealer.... hope they can fix it. But I still want my money back to pay for this one!!!!!!

The same thing happened with me and my 1996 dodge dakota. The check engine light comes on when there is an issue with the emissions of the vehicle. Usually it is a oxygen sensor that has fouled with carbon. Usually they replace it and you are done. O2 sensors are not cheap although they are quite simple in design. They usually sell for $80-$150 and wholesale go for about $15 but it is one of the only car parts you can't buy at wholesale. Replacing them yourself is easy although it can be tricky because there are two O2 sensors(which one is it). It takes about 15 minutes to put it on the lift and change it out. The computer then must be reset or drive 100 miles to reset it. When this happened to my truck I just drove it with the light on. Go on a long trip during the summer where you are exceeding 65mph for 100 miles or so and the carbon usually burns off and fixes itself. I kept bringing it in to the dealer and they kept resetting the computer until I could pass inspection. I drove around for a year until I had to go through the same crap again with the inspection. A small price to pay instead of getting a new car. You cannot get your money back unless you go to small claims court. The dealer knows this and 99.9% of people are too busy to deal that for just $400. You can go to the chamber of commerce but your best bet is to find out who the owner is and write them a complaint personally. Be civil. If you can find there home address and get it directly in their hands you would be surprised especially if you are a loyal customer there. Most dealers in the ads always seem to say how their customers stick with them and buy multiple cars through them over the years. The same goes with the service department. If this does not work you could also take out an ad in the local paper where the dealer is located and explain your plight. Nothing gets things rolling like bad plublicity. Be careful about libel suits. Make sure everything in the ad is correct and if they sue then counter sue on them trying to destroy your credibilty through the original libel suit. It's funny how our system works. Legends are made from the plight of everyday people.

What sensor did they replace? Get your warranty book out of the glove box (or your file - right) and check the exhaust emmision warranty. some of those items are covered for a long time. It might still be under warranty. Call the Toyota "factory" hot line - customer service and discuss your problem with them. Have all specific details available. Maybe they can mediate between you and the dealer. they don't want dealers pissing off customers unnecessarily.

The dealer will claim that the $400 goes towards the labor in trying to find the trouble. Mechnical labor cost now average about $60/hr.
