That's the way the Catholic Church used to be. It was considered heresy to want to read the Bible unless you were a priest. But even many of them couldn't read so they had to rely on what they heard from other people.

Oh come on, that's not new. There are catholic and baptist clergy who don't want their sheep reading the bible for themselves either. Reading the bible for myself opened my eyes to the fact that I'll never again rely on the words of any one clergy about my own beliefs. My christian faith is much stronger for having read it myself.

did you know that back in the day only the rich or the royals had any access to the Bible whatsoever. Their thoughts and translations and influence were the first to 'infect' the bible.
