My sister-in-law sent over some spaghetti sauce that is way too sweet for us. Is there any way to cut the sweetness?

Try distilled white vinegar.
Remember your food chemistry...the opposite of sweet is sour.
If u use salt u have to add the exact amount versus the sugar to balance the taste.

The easiest way is to add a small can of tomato paste. If you do not want the sauce any thicker, though, you can also add a little vinegar or some red wine/red sherry.

Also, a hint to keep from getting the sauce too sweet to begin with - use brown sugar (a little at a time) instead of regualr sugar, and throw in some fennel seeds (just a few).

Someone said to add sauce or paste to take out the sweetness? Hmmmm...I thought this was how spaghetti
sauce was made to begin with..Tomatoes , sauce and paste. Think I will try the lemon juice.

Try adding a can of tomato paste. It will take the sweet taste from the sauce without thinning it out too much. If you add things like lemon juice you run the risk of making the sauce too thin.

Tomato paste is too sweet. I say no to that.

Most commercial spaghetti sauces are too sweet for me.......so no to that, too.

Lemon is okay - for a quick fix.

"I" would add plain tomato puree or canned crushed tomatoes.....a little at a time until it corrects itself. You may have to "cook it" an additional 30 minutes to incorporate. It is worth it.
If sauce "seems" too thick after this.....add a little chicken or beef broth to thin.

I cook homemade Spaghetti sauce a LOT. Trust me.

Cook some carrots and mash them and add to sauce (the flavor of the carrots will not be noticeable unless you add way too much)

Add a teeny bit of worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, or red wine vinegar.

Lemon juice.

Try each of these things out using a tiny sample of the sauce each time. Then, whichever ones work best--add it to the whole sauce! Don't test on the whole sauce or else you might ruin it all.

You should add a little salt and vinegar to cut down on the sugar, then make adjustments according to your taste preferences. Also, if you ever find that a dish is too salty, place a peeled potato in the liquid, which will draw out the extra salt.

She probably added sugar to the sauce as some do to cut the tomato taste....[not I though!]

Use salt and a tad of lemon juice.
