I am a server at a restaurant and am wondering how much the average person tips.

I always tip 20%, on occasion I may only tip 15% if the server was a little off. I'm a server so I understand that waitstaff makes their money from tips, and not from their $20 a week paycheck.

A tip should be based on Service.
The standard tip is approx 15%.
An easy way to figure it is Double the tax.
You should never EXPECT a tip.. major "faux pas" running to the table while the customer is still there to grab your tip and grumbling if it's not what you expected. ..

Never give someone 'extra ones' so they'll have money to tip, unless they request it.

Lots of factors can effect how much I tip.
I count off if they, for example: are rude, never refill my tea, don't bring me something extra I requested.

Major points off...Do not apologize for screwing up my order.
They can make up for it, if they apologize, more points, send the manager over to apologize, (even better when the comp the meal). At the point the Tip returns to the standard.

I may give an even larger tip for a large group, but only if the company doesn't insist on adding in the tip. I have even made an exception to that rule, when service was exceptionally good, or when the waiter gave up all his other tables just to wait on us.

There are times though, when I just don't have the extra money to tip big. In that case, I leave whatever I can, and make sure I tell the manager what good service I had.

How to get a good tip? Have fun! Smile! Laugh! Joke! If you can't get back to the table because you have a large order, apologize, tell them truth and ask someone else to keep an eye on their drinks, if they have little kids, entertain them... so the parents can enjoy their meal. ... they may not be able to tip you then, but they will remember and tip you when they can. And try not to wait till they have a mouth full of food to ask if everything is okay.

Double the first digit and add a dollar, so if the bill was
$35 I would leave $7. If I received really good service I leave
+ a very generous tip.

15-20%, but it really depens on the service...bad service -no tip!

In the past i tipped anyway even for bad service, but I thought that the tipping goes a little overboard in this country, so now it's nothing anymore.

I gladly tip 15-20% if the server was friendly, nice and quick and the food was good.

i leave a dollar more than 20 percent, but i'm in the minority. i was a bartender for 5 1/2 years don't forget to expect the daily 45 cent tip or nothing at all!!!! these are the same people who tell you what a good job you're doing and then leave nothing!!!

I usually tip at least $3 if 15% percent of the bill is less than that.

Depends on how wealthy an area you are waitressing in.
When I waitressed in an upper-middle class area, I got about17-25%. When I was in a more lower-middle class area, I got about 12-15%.

around 18% if the service was good.

if not, between 10 and 15.

i never stiff them, cuz i've been in your shoes. it sucks to bust your *** and have to deal with grouchy customers and incompetent cooks, and get stiffed after all that work. i would only stiff someone who was downright rude, but that has never happened.
