It isn't specific to one country or region. From immigration records, people from Afghanistan to Austria came here with that surname. It's German, Croatian and Turkish, as well as Italian and Albanian. In Muslim it means "Moses". In Italy it's a place name. In Germany it's ???

Add to that the fact that it's an abbreviation of many longer Slavic names and it would be hard to say for sure what it means until you go back and find where your particular family came from and what their ethnic and religious affiliations were.

It is almost for sure an immigrant abbreviation, if you look at the concentration of Musa's, the vast majority in the 1920's were in New York, a dead giveaway that they were coming in through Ellis Island. You could try to find out when exactly they came over and look in the Ellis Island records if they listed the country of origin. From this country, you can get the real meaning of the name, and hopefully it's longer version. It could be Musacovicz (Czech) or Musallargo (Italian)... no way to know without that country of origin.

From its Latin root, "musa" means the woman that inspires an artist.
