i'd really recomend a Boston Acoustics g5. reason being is there only 450 watts rms, and there only $400 a pop. you can get them on ebay for about $200. 450 watts is important, cause you dont need a huge amp to power it. thats good, cause huge amps are expensive. also you shouldnt need more then about 1000 watts rms. you go over that and most cars start having voltage problems like lights diming.
here are some sub brands i highly recomend.
Boston Acoustics
Kenwood Exceolon
Pioneer Premier
Image Dynamics
RE Audio
TC Sounds
Diamond Audio
Eclipse
and here are some amps
Eclipse
Kenwood Excelon
Boston Acoustics
Audison
Diamond Audio

There are many answers and suggestions to this questions you have asked, and the best verdict is yourself. I would suggest that you go to an audio show-case store (Sears, PC Richards, Best buy, 6th ave, Circuit City......) and test out the speakers. Here are some suggestions for the Subs and the Amps.
Subs (just a rough list)
1) Alpine Type-R / Type S
2) Infinity Kappa Perfects
3) JL Audio
4) JBL
5) Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 2
6) MTX Thunder 5500
7) Boston Acoustics G5
Amplifiers
1) Kenwood
2) Alpine
3) Pioneer
4) MTX Thunder
5) Infinity Reference
6) JL Auido
7) Rockford
When choosing a Sub, i would suggest that you pick out something that is right for your car, A compact to a midsize is ample enough with two 10" subs or a single 12" (I prefer two 10s) operating at 2Ohm. The reason is the low the resistance, the better sound quality and punch that you get from the subs. And you have to match the Subs' normal power output (300W nominal 750W peak) to a 300 or a 350 Watt Amplifer operating at 2Ohm RMS (nominal). Hope that helps.

This question will be followed up with another question....
What kind of music do you like? How stock do you want to leave your car? How important is it to use all of your car at any time without limitations? How loud do you like your music? What kind of car do you have?
Once you define these questions it will be much easier to formulate your sound system and get a good idea where to spend the money and where to save a few bucks.
A good web address I use is:
www.sonicelectronix.com
They are competitively priced and are a power seller on the auction site.

Well it depends on the kind of vehicle you have. You can get 2rockford fosgate woofer[1000watts a piece] and a same brand amp at [2000 watts] the amp has a built in fan so it won't over heat with that in mind you can blast your radio with it sounding clear.

i replaced my whole system last week. i replaced the door speakers which were small (100w)and the rear speakers 6x9's(460w) and a small 300w amp. all by pioneer premier. i didnt need alot of power, but it sounds fantastic. much clearer than my factory system. it started with just the headset but i was convinced to bump up the others. had i just gotten the headset, it wouldnt sound as good. crystal clear and just enough bass. also check what fits your car. go to www.crutchfield.com and you will be able to see what fits your car. also ask a few friends where they got their sounds from. if you go local, most places will give you a deal on bundled items. take a man with you, it worked for me. good luck.

first of all, stay away from walmart subs. second, wattage doesnt really matter, its the size and brand. if u awnt a great system, try 1 or 2 kicker 10,12,or 15in L7 subs. the wattage is diff on each but kicker as a amp to sub guide on their site. if i had to go with something else though u might try mtx. but kicker pounds.

I've always liked Rockford Fosgate amps myself. And perhaps MTX, Kicker, or Eclipse for woofers. But you should run your amp at the RMS of your subs
