I think the large bakeries send the freshly baked bread overseas where underpaid, starving children laborers put the bread in the plastic bags and twist those wire ties by hand on every loaf of bread. Of course, the children can't eat any of the bread for fear of being beaten. Also, they're not allowed to leave their seats to take a potty break so they just have to use empty bread wrappers.

Once the bread is tied, it's shipped back to the US and distributed to your local supermarket.

The more ethical bakeries use machines to do the twist ties.
It's just another step along the conveyor belt.

First of I would like to say to whoever said that it is poor children in some other country....I LOVED your answer. Hopefully you weren't serious but, your answer was very funny.

Now to answer the question, I haven't ever really thought of that. That is an interesting question. My first guess would be machines but, I dont think that a machine would be able to pick up the bag of bread and then twist the little tie thingy. Machines are too big to do that, they might ruin the bread. I think that they have workers who do that because it is probably faster and easier.

I buy bread direct from the fire (no wrap) but I think that they would get wokers to do this particular job when can eazily be done by machines
