Anytime there is an infection after surgery, cultures need to be taken and the physician should have explained to you what it is. Septic usually means it is in the blood. This is not that uncommon. However, I would definately find out what the bacteria is. MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus) is usually the culprit these days, but not always.

If he is septic then he has a large amount of bacteria in his blood and tissues. Likely this was from the surgery. I am confident that he is on antibiotic therapy at this time and hopefully the bacteria is not a resistant strain. If it is resistant to the drugs then he could be in serious trouble. I wish him all the best and hoping he will do well.

That means that at some point he got an infection. This can be from many things, from a urinary catheter to an IV, or from his knee incisions.

Did you ask the doctor what that meant? They should explain things to you.
