My "cousin's" husband is Polish. He was here illegally; they married in a rush just in case, then had a wedding a year later. That was 8 years ago. Three years ago, the marriage was investigated. My cousin had was interrogated about every little thing in her husband's life; she then had to get family and friends to write letters to prove the marriage was "real." That was five years after they had their first wedding so he could stay in the country legally. The whole time they were investigating they told him he could be deported at any time, and he was not allowed to travel (by plane or train or any other thing where his license was needed).
Everything worked out okay for them, in fact he just got his American citizenship this past September. But can you imagine going through all that for "a person who is seeking legal status"? After seeing that process, I feel confident that you would get caught.

Yes it is safe...but will it last that is the question. If you know the guy and you both love each other, then it should not matter...a lot of guys want to come to the US but they also want a good wife while they are doing it...
If you don't know each other that well, then make sure you wait till you do....a lot of people's relationships do not work out and it has nothing to do with status...so that should not be the focus of your attention......my opinion

No way! My brother married a lady from the Phillipines.... They were married 5 years, as soon as she gained legal US alian rights, she divorced him. That's not the worst part, she was cheating on him the whole time!
Bottom line, don't do it. He/she will lie to you, tell you whatever you want to hear, and in 5 years... You will be left with a broken heart and wasted time.

As in... marry them to give them legitimate citizenship?
I know that the Immigration Services take marriages of convenience extremely seriously. I went once with a college friend to renew his student visa -- I had a car, so I drove him the 15 miles to the Customs station. I was sitting outside in the sun reading a book waiting for him to come out again....when the Immigration officer came out and asked me indoors. They interviewed me for about 30 minutes to determine what my relationship was to this guy I knew from a social club and just happened to offer a ride to...
How do you think they'll handle an actual marriage application?
If you're marrying for love, great, go for it, and tough out any legalistic weather that comes your way. If you're doing it for the visa/citizenship, think long and hard.

I would be very very wary of doing so. They would have to show that they are active in attaining legal status and not wanting to marry me in order to be legal.

If you are marrying someone just for that purpose then it will come back to bite you in the butt.
