In order to gain muscle your exercise regiment should consist of both cardio and weight lifting. You build muscles through both weight lifting and cardio, but that alone will not build muscle. Your diet plays a big part of it. You should make sure that your diet contains lean proteins – chicken, egg whites, low-fat cottage cheese. You can have a red meat every now and then, but you would not want to have it every night, because it is high in fat and hard on the digestive tract. Proteins help your muscles recover from the workout as well as build more muscle. My favorite workout book with diet help is Five Factor Fitness by Harley Pasternak. I learned it did not take working out for two hours a day to make a difference in my body. I just brought additional copies at amazon.com today for my family - $6.49 for the hardback.

Start lifting weights. If your only want to tone your body without building muscle, use light weights, high repetitions,,,,
for building muscle, its heavy weights (don't strain yourself) low reps.
Although a person may use light weights most would still begin to gain some muscle, just not that ripped look.
Keep in mind too that its more difficult for women to build muscle than men. Men are naturally made with more muscle. Women are built "soft" for carrying babies.
You will feel better for doing so and its great for losing weight too.

By eating lots of protein and working out. When you work do cardio you are strengthening your heart.
To receive the maximum benefit you should do a minimum of 20 per day. My favorite machine the indoor rower because it gives you a complete full body work out. You will sweat. And that's good b/c that is ultimately what you want to get results.
If you aren't sweating. . . You aren't working out hard enough.
When you use the weight machines you tear down muscle and when it repairs itself it is in turn stronger. That is why you need the extra protein.
Be sure to drink lots of water or sports drinks while exercising to replace fluids and electrolytes.

Ways to gain muscle or how the body actually builds muscle tissue?
When under load beyond normal muscle limits, the muscle contracts and little rips form from the added stress. This triggers the muscle to regrow bigger as you keep training.

there is just an EXCELLENT book that you must read.
Burn the fat, feed the muscle by joey venutto
it tells all the truth of all diets (and why they don work), body types (not every exercise is for everyone) and many many things
After years of reading a lot of nutrition, this would be my absolut pick.

By exercising the muscles you create minute tears within gthe muscle tissues. Through healing the tissue grows larger and strengthens.
