I've been working with him for 6 years and I've helped improve-expand and modernize the business. I have very well proven that I'm capable of running it on my own. The problem is that now his old fashioned ideas and practises are an obstacle to the business' developement but he doesn't seem to realise it, how can I make him understand it's time to let go and rest.

Sounds like it is HIS business.....and do not be so quick to judge what is old fashioned in practice or ideas. Today's world is so bereft of certain old fashioned practices, I imagine your customers may just like his style. All that is new and modern is not necessarily right or good. It is not up to you to decide that it is time for him to 'let go and rest'....he will make that decision when he is ready. In the meantime why not engage him in conversation about his business methods - you might just learn a thing or two.

A lot of people are resistant to the idea of retirement. My 82 year old grandmother has retired three times and is still working as a substitute teacher.

This is especially hard if the business is one he started. His identity is probably wrapped up in the business and his work. If your relationship is good enough with him you can have a talk with him. Why doesn't he want to retire? Does he enjoy working? Does he feel the business will flounder without his guiding hand? Does he need the money? Does he think he needs the money?

Maybe you could suggest he work only part-time. Keep his hand in the business but take some time off to enjoy his earnings. Can you explain to him that his old-fashioned ideas are hurting the business? It could be that the change you brought happened much too fast for him to be comfortable with. He may see himself as tempering your 'new-fangled' ideas.

The bottom line is that there is little you can do if he doesn't want to quit. Rather, thete are many things you could do, but maintaining the familial relationship might be hard. It may come down to you deciding which is more important to you, the business or harmony in the family.

Hope this helps

I wouldn't let him go, you can need all the help you can get when you are running a business, and when it's family and it's free, I would be grateful.

Is it "our" business or his business? You are treading on thin ice if it is his business. Can you give him some role that does not interfere with your "modnerization" plans?
