I just got home from one, and I do not envy the job of those judges one bit. As a spectator, I did well judging the Dobermans, as I marked them in my book as they showed and compared them to the judges placements!

Hoping to show my red female when she is about 7 months, she's just 16 wks right, so we have alot of work ahead of us!

Little Penny is in Puppy Classes now with basic obedience, and the trainer (used to show dobermans) works in a little handling with us, little bits at a time. She thinks Penny has potential, so what the heck....why not!

Tom 1: The Judge for todays Hound Group was Richard F. Greathouse MD, and tomorrows Judge will be Jerry M Watson.

Just don't forget that first priority is to have fun.
Was it a "sanctioned" or "point show" ??
Huge difference in who the judges will be.
@ 4 months it's time for your baby to be doing some handling classes, is there an "all breed club" close??? If so check to see if they will be doing a handling class. Most do at this time of year to get their pups ready for the spring shows.

I was at a Funmatch this last Saturday. I love dog shows and can't wait to start showing again. I showed my whole life living at home but now that I'm on my own it's been harder. Anyway I was going to say that judging would be very difficult because you need to know the breed standard for each breed that you are judging. That's especially true when you are judging a group or BIS.

As far as I know AKC is the only "SHOW" for the look of the dogs etc. there is or that is recognized. And yes I have been to one and Gee I would hate to be a judge in some cases and in others as well. Some put dogs in the ring that are not so good and shouldn't be there. The shows that I have been to had very few spectators. It is all an amazing thing ,they allowed me to tour all behind the scenes and see what was going on in preparation and even touch and feel the dogs.I found everyone there very happy to let you observe and ask questions. It was sooooo great .Let me add I saw absolutely No mis treatment of any Dogs anywhere back stage or in the ring."NOWhere"All dogs were treated with love and affection.I have had people selling AKC Dogs that have had all these Pedigrees and Champion Lines say they would not sell to anyone even thinking about showing. What is up with that????One Lady even said she had shown and she didn't lke the way the show dogs were treated??Stated that she didn't like them to be caged up????Then on her very web site she says the best way to potty train is crate training. What is the difference. Those Babies at the shows were snorring like babies. They were pampered pets.I believe these people with "Show DOG CHAMPION QUALITY PUPS $ SALE"Are proballynot telling the truth about their dogs or are jealous and afraid someone will out do the other???Or maybe raise better quality pups ???Anyway you go gurl!!!Go for it !!!Love your baby and show it to the World!!!!Be responsible and have fun!!!!!

Get her started in puppy classes now or depending on your age junior handling classes.
Get into classes it takes lots of work to learn how to and train a dog how to show and be good at it. Some dogs who are show quality hate to show and just will never be really great at it.
I have one weim who is like htat. She has field titles but hates the conformation ring and just shuts down so she has lots of field titles but no conformation points. If she hates it why bother. She is a great dog in the field.
Good luck with your Dobe. I have had dobes for 18 years and done some showing with a couple of mine. The one loved to do the pet therapy thing so we did more of that.

I go watch sometimes but I prefer to compete in UKC shows. MUCH friendlier atmosphere and no professional handlers. All of the judges have been patient with me as I learn. Instead of just penalizing my dogs, they ask me to repeat anything I may have messed up. My dogs win on their own merit instead of my handling skills (which aren't horrible but I do need to improve a couple of things). Just a suggestion for you since it is a better learning atmosphere. You can use your AKC registration to register a dobe with UKC. You use the single registration form. Fill that out and mail a copy of your dog's three generation pedigree along with the form and payment.

If you have a ring full of nice dogs, it can be the toughest (but most fun) job in the world!

Good luck with your little girl -- I know that Dobes are a hard breed to "break into" at the shows! Lots of stiff competition!

Yeah,I'm amazed at the entire process. I have to keep reminding myself the dogs are judged against the breed standard NOT each other.
