that depends what you call "other worlds". however it is usually because their minds lose a hold on reality and they gointo a world that is ideal to them.

First of all, all mental illness or disorders willnot cause people to go into their own world which one is generally called dissasociative disorder. Some people become delusional. For such illnesses, some people prefer to go into a place where they donot have to deal with a certain event or situation. People with mental disorder donot always live this way. Some of these disorders could begin with depression. Genectics could possibly have something to do with certain disorders. Chemical imbalances in the brain plays a major part in depression. Sometimes a different place or as you wrote- a different world may be the only way a person can handle. Sort of like self-preservation.

not all mental illnesses do. and its not really another world, i would say like the first person said, you lose touch with reality. and they are not really called illnesses, they are called disorders. the ones that do this are the schizophrenic disorders mainly. i cant think of the other ones that would make you lose touch with reality as much as these do. like OCD and other anxiety disorders, you have to find some way to calm that anxiety so you do wierd things like in the movie "as good as it gets." hope this info helps!!

They are still in this world, they just think they are in another world. That's why it's called 'mental' illness.

In a sense it does. I mean you can feel like you are in one.....I have anxiety and it makes me feel like im behind a glass wall...or my head is all cloudy...like Im in a dream...but even then i know Im still where ever I am...I still carry on a normal life...
Schizophrenia on the other hand can make someone confuse what they see with reality...(Which in my opinion is terribly sad).
