I was always taught that while woman can wear hats indoors, it's rude for guys to do the same. Does anyone even follow this "rule" anymore?

* It is impolite to wear a man's hat indoors, but not for a woman. It is a lost curiosity in this day and age, along with a lot of pleasantries.

Indoors, a hat is removed most of the time. The exceptions to the indoor hat removal rule are in a public place such as an air terminal or post office, or in the entrance halls and corridors of office buildings and hotels. The rules for elevators are complex but they can be summarized as bare headed is always correct. Emily Post does make an exception in a crowded elevator when there is no place to hold a hat - perhaps we could extend the exception to airplanes.

I don't wear hats much unless it's very cold, but men removing their hats indoors is one of those rules I think is really stupid! I went to college in Colorado & lived for some time in the country in Texas. Well, lot of farmers & cattle folk etc out there... they work hard and it's pretty warm a good part of the year. This doesn't exactly do great things to their hair underneath their hat; the hat looks fine but when they take it off, their hair is sweaty & plastered on their head. Somehow one kid in college still always went around taking off other guys' hats in the dining room. Instead of looking at a nice hat we were looking at their sweaty, plastered hair, great, just great!

I don't know where this rule originiated, but I suspect it must've been among a class of people who didn't work outside in the sun much. Either way, ever since those days I've considered it very stupid, a nice hat isn't ugly and I far prefer it over plastered-down hair! Please people, time to do away with this rule, if you wear a hat, keep it ON!

As a woman, I like to wear my hats while in my own home. I don't wear fancy hats because I'm not that girly, I prefer to wear the baseball cap style hats. I also have an Uncle Sam hat, a witches hat, a regular Santa hat, and a Spongebob Santa hat that I wear during the month of whichever one of those holidays is coming up. Also, whenever I'm alone for dinner and my hair isn't greasy, I like to wear one of my baseball cap style hats at the table while I'm eating. I never wear a hat when my hair is greasy.

At the turn of the century, women's hats were so large that it was difficult to remove the hat pin holding it in place so it was decided that etiquette wouls allow ladies to keep their hats on indoors. Now as for men, only the ignorant ones wear a hat indoors. Now I see these guys who wear their sunglasses on the brim of the hat thinking it looks so cool. It doesn't.TAKE IT OFF! Especially when on a job interview.

I wear hats indoors sometimes. Depends on the function.

Often a woman's hat is part of the outfit she is wearing. There are beautiful hats around. This is acceptable for social functions, brunch or lunch, garden parties, but not dinner.

Men traditionally remove their hats indoors, unless at an outdoor function, cafe, outdoor party, etc.

Women usually don't remove hats indoors. A man should always remove his hat when he enters a home, office or elevator. In public places, like airports or train stations, a man may keep his hat on. People that wear their hats at dinner tables should be boiled in the soup.

Guys rarely do.
What a shame.

I once ate at one of Napa Valleys' premiere restaurants (Auberge du Soleil).
I took time to dress the part, including jacket and tie (and I HATE ties!) because this was a classy place.

So there I am, dropping more than a couple of Ben Franklin's for my own dinner and wine, when in walks a few guys wearing jerseys and ball caps.

Okay - one would have thought that they wouldn't have gotten a seat, but they were seated and had dinner near me.
Not once did they take off their caps.

Call me old fashioned, but if I wanted to slum-dine with the hoi polloi, I'd have gone to a burger joint.

Some places just seem appropriate for dressing up, most are okay for dressing down.
Either way, "gentlemen" should remove their hats when indoors, anywhere.

Its one of those "rules" that have died out. In my house if a man wears a hat I remove it for him. My son does not wear a hat indoors.

Its because of the fact, hat became into designed to guard our head and hair from sunlight, dirt, airborne dirt and dirt, poultry poop etc. in simple terms like wearing an underclothes above trousers is mindless, further wearing a hat interior is mindless. you do no longer choose an umbrella in bathe further you do no longer choose hat interior. It has no longer something to do with anger, disappointed or adverse emotion. some human beings in simple terms over react to small issues. Its all approximately basic sense.
