I can answer that because I was not "indoctrinated" as a child. God called me to him. It was a yearning in my heart- I knew there was more. This can't be all there is- and what do you know- its not. There's more and it is God that brought me to know it.

Experiences that they cannot explain.
When I was a Christian, I had a deeply profound vision that literally threw me to my knees, sobbing and bawling, utterly convicted of my sins. The third part was literally standing on the road, looking up into Jesus's face as he hung from the cross, and he looked me square in the eyes and mouthed the words, "I do it for you," then did the whole "Eloi, ELOI, Lemma sabbacthani" thing.
At the time, I had absolutely no comprehension of neurology, self-hyponosis, autohypnosis, etc. However, as I studied these very topics years later, I came to understand how this 'vision' was a very natural consequence of my personal beliefs, my emotional state, and my current stimuli (at the time, I was listening to a tape of the Christian musician Carmen, specifically the song 'One').
People have NDE's and do not understand the neurology and biology behind them, and lacking other explanation, they embrace them as proof of the divine or of the after life. I myself have had an NDE and multiple OBE's in my life, but with that understanding of how they happen, I realized that it is not in fact Fenrirwulf talking to me but basically my own brain talking to itself to make sense out of chaotic and abnormal firing patterns.
To put it bluntly: Faith springs from ignorance, intentional or unintentional, enforced or unenforced.

religioius or not, faith is still a very good characteristic to carry within you. Life can be extremely hopeless without it. People still have to get through the ruff times, you know---life continues...with or without religion.

Personal experience.
And to the person that said "fear". You aparently don't know what true faith is. You cannot have faith, if you have fear. With fear, it becomes more of an obligation. Faith is straight up, belief.
