Yes you can it is done frequently in Anxiety disorders. Xanax is great for treatment of Acute Anxiety disorder. It takes care of the problem you are having right now. Celexa is good to keep anxiety disorders from coming back but it wont reach full effect for about 4 weeks. What your doctor is most likely doing is weaning you off of xanax while the dose of celexa is gradually increased. If that's not the intended plan, you should get in contact with your doctor. not because it's dangerous but because there is no reason to continue both together for a period longer than 3 months.

Contact your pharmacist or your prescribing physician. I would not suggest to take them at the same time but the Celexa maintains a therapeutic level in the blood stream while the Xanax has a shorter half-life which is why you take the Celexa once a day and you can take the Xanax more often, although you should always follow the directions per the prescription bottle.

If Celexa is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Tell your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter drugs you are planning to take, and be especially certain to check with him before combining Celexa with the following:

Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Cimetidine (Tagamet)
Erythromycin (Eryc, Ery-Tab)
Fluconazole (Diflucan)
Itraconazole (Sporanox)
Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
Lithium (Lithobid, Lithonate)
Metoprolol (Lopressor)
Omeprazole (Prilosec)
Other antidepressants such as Elavil, Norpramin, Pamelor, and Tofranil
Sumatriptan (Imitrex)
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Give your pharmacist a call if you have concerns.

ask your doctor for more information. your case is unique to others and only your doctor can advise you on that matter.
