I go to a state secondary school. I'm a very quiet person, but EVERYONE in that school, bar 10, (750 pupils) swear. And by swearing I mean "Wheres that *four_letter_word* pen?"or "....ing hell man!".
I hate it, and people frown at me for not!
The only time I have was 1) when my computer got rid of my coursework (2) When I thought I set off the fire alarm.

Do people not realise what swearing is?
Or am I in the wrong?
Please explain?

Ignorance. Plus people use it to puntuate. IF you are going to swear I think it should be to show great annoyance like your two examples. I hate it when people use swear words like they can be allowed as a normal part of a converstaion. Stick to your guns. You don't have to follow the crowd on this! And good for you! I'm all for a good "fiddlesticks" or "rats-a fratz" any day!

I don't believe we are lacking in intelligence at all, I graduate from college in less than 7 weeks and I swear. I do it because I like it. It has to do with personal preferences, for instance as you stated above you swore when your computer crashed and when you set off the fire alarm, some people swear when they have sex or in everyday conversation. That is their prerogative and their choice as to how they want to use the English Language. I think you need to ask yourself why swearing invokes such a negative feeling for you, the connotations you associate with swear words as you call them stems from what? your religious back ground. The truth is, a word is just that a word, we as individual decided the meaning or connotation that each word has. Personally I swear when I feel like and when I think its inappropriate for the situation, I don't. I try to be respectful of other, but swear words hold no negative connotation for me, they are just harsh words usually said in a state of extreme emotion.

Stick to what you believe!

I also hate unnecessary swearing and find it is often due to:

a) Low IQ.
b) People trying to be 'cool'.
c) An inability to express one's self properly.
d) A combination of the above.

Well done for not being a foul-mouthed sheep like the rest of your school (and most of society)!

words don't have inherent meaning, it depends on context - lexically and temporally/culturally. Swear words are no longer just swear words, they are also intensifiers like "really" and "very".

"Why am I so bothered by what others do (that isn't harming me)?" might have been a more insightful question. If you wish everyone else to be like you then you're going to lead a very frustrated life.

Language changes over time. Don't worry about it, just worry about your own use of it. Are you communicating effectively to others or not??????

No your not wrong Your dead right. I am guilty of swearing myself. But only swear in the company of other men. Nowadays I hear people men and women swearing regardless of where they are or who is listening. You carry on as you are manners mean a lot.

I swear, if I fall down a ladder, or something really awful happens.

Your school mates will grow out of it (I hope).

English language has much more to offer than moronic explitives aassuming one can read and has a creative mind.

Some adults do this as well, they sound really, really dumb.

You are not wrong.

I believe it is a lack of self control, it is also a very poor way of expressing one,s self.
It is as you suggest the "norm" for most people, and it is refreshing to know that some people still on this planet who can speak without profanities.
I rarely ever need to swear and then it is usually in my own company and not heard by others.

I was going to answer I don't bloody know, but I do. It is for effect. It is a sign of emotional and verbal weakness. People who sware are unable to express their pent-up emotion through the use of good English. It is a relief valve to these people.

Unfortunately, it is your school's environment. Other students thought that to fit in, one needs to curse.

Bravo to you for remaining true to your ideals even when under pressure "people frown at me for not (cursing)". You will know your real friends because they will accept you as you are.

Please remain as you are, it will be all the better for you and in society in general.

Well done, for not lowering your standards. I don't have a problem when people swear when talking among themselves. What annoys me is when parents swear when talking in front of their children. To me thats VERBAL ABUSE!
