can anyone give me an idea how big a ceiling bedallion should be? i'm going to buy a new chandellier for my foyer. i live in a raised rance and the foyer is not big but ceiling is high. i will get an average chandellier. i was looking at a ceiling medallion in the range of 24-29 or 30 inch in diameter. i got one that is a little bigger than 19 inch for my kitchen ceiling fan it looks a bit small.
any suggestions?????????

ceiling is probably 16 ft and the chandelier will hang straight down from a chain anywhere from 18-24 inches maybe a little more. the walls are a very golden yellow, oak trim and doors and the theme is tuscan when i'm done. fixture will be in a bronze or rust or "tuscan" finish. no brass or silver or anything shiny. wrought iron. what do you think?

I use ceiling medallions in many of my lighting projects. You need to take three things into consideration: scale of the lighting fixture you are using the medallion to enhance, the height of the ceiling and color. For example, on a 52" blade ceiling fan that is say, oiled bronze with cherry blades, I use a medallion that is in the 35" range, faux finished rust with a 9 foot high ceiling. The object is optical, not actual scale. The darker the fixture and medallion in combination with a high ceiling makes both the fixture and the mediallion appear smaller. The closer the fixture is placed to the medallion the larger the medallion will appear against the fixture. You can use a larger medallion if your fixture is dropped from it on a downrod or chain because the distance created between the two will optically make the medaillion seem smaller. Thus, if your chandellier will hang from a chain on say a 18 foot high ceiling, use a larger medallion than you think you need for scale.

Try 2/3 the size of the chandelier. Smaller, but not too small. If the widest part of the chandelier is 30 inches, get a medallion that is 20 inches. This way, it's not taking away from the lighting piece, and it's still large enough to not be ignored. Good luck!

It should be similar in scale to the chandelier. If it's much smaller, it will disappear, and if it's much larger, it will overpower the light fixture.

I think it should come out at least as far as the widest point of the fixture.
