I heard a Benedictine Monk who is ordained in both the Roman and Byzantine rites say that the emphasis of the Roman Church is to avoid sin, but that the Byzantine rite teaches that mere avoidance of sin is not sufficient. Their emphasis is on the attainment of virtue. It seems to me that would be a more positive approach to the greater glory of God through the acts of the faithful. How would one do that?

Well look at it this way, going through life avoiding sin alone, is like going on a journey avoiding every person who tries to sell you weed, and ignoring the old man who looked so hungry he would faint down.

A person who strives for virtue, would have noticed the old man, even if the person wasnt begging for food.

In this subtle nuance, you have your answer.

Well, yes. It is SUFFICIENT for a Christian to avoid sin. According to the doctrine of Chritianity, the sacrifice of Christ was sufficient. From what I understand about it, you will not go to hell, even if you haven't been that great at avoiding sin, as long as you have repented and accepted Christ. Maybe the question that would be better to ask is "Do you want to do only what is sufficient?" Without worrying about what the end result is going to be, or what's in it for you. It seems like it would be a good idea to strive for virtue, even if you were not a religious person at all.

The Bible teaches us that we should strive to follow Christ's example. Things like helping the homeless, turning the other cheek, not judging others, volunteer work for non-profits, anything that not only is sin free, but puts self-value behind the greater good of all mankind.

All a guy or woman needs to do to become a Christian is: Admit you're a sinner who won't be able to shop your self, have self assurance Christ died to your sins and arose the 0.33 day, and ask Christ into your heart to be your Lord and Savior. each and everything else follows, yet so a good distance as salvation is going, it rather is all absolutely everyone needs to do to be saved. when you're saved, you're meant to stay the way God could decide for, even nevertheless it has no longer something to do with in case you're saved or no longer.

I believe that avoidance of sin is not nearly enough. We should always strive for more and by this yes, attainment of virtue. We should try to attain virtue in all of our daily deeds and actions.

Jesus instructions were to, in a nutshell, love what is good and hate what is bad. The Apostle Paul in Galatians 5 gives us both the "works of the flesh" which are to be avoided" and the "fruitages of the spirit" which are to be cultivated. Finally at Zephaniah 2:3 we are told to SEEK righteousness, SEEK meekness..."

You can only be as good as you want to be. It doesn't really matter which faith or which doctrine you adhere to.

If you are a good person and you love others as you love yourself it will show in your actions and the way you interact with others.

Just be as good as you can each and every day and most importantly do onto others as you would have done onto you.

God Bless and good luck to you.
