have a 1992 Volvo 940GL with 225K miles that has started randomly stalling out while driving at highway speeds. So far there is no correlation to gas level in the tank or weather, it does it on sunny days as well as rainy, and with full tank. Fuel pump, plugs, wires, distributor are all new and have had no effect. It immediately starts again when the key is turned off and then restarted. Sometimes it does this several times per day, sometimes it won't do this for several days or even weeks. This is very frustrating and every time I bring it to a garage it is running fine and they can find nothing wrong. Anyone have any ideas ??

I had the same problem with my 740. When it warms up on the highway it sputters and dies. Check the cap again and the rotor, check all wires and your fuel filter plus your relays.

I also have a 1992 940 GLE with 290,000 kilometers on it. It does the exact same thing. I have changed the plugs, and wires, no help. After I changed the battery, it stopped doing it for at least a week, then the problem returned. I personally think it has something to do with the computer which is under the seat, which was reset via battery change. Since this is my POS that gets me too and from work, I just live with it. The fun part is when it happens at night, and my Euro spec car turns the lights off when I shut off the ignition and restart on the fly... yeehaw.

I had the same problem (studdering etc, not picking up and all that) on my Volvo and i was ready to spend a few thousand dollars to really get this car up and running... simple answer given and done to my vehicle was a spark plug change... i know your plugs are brand new but most mechanics DONT KNOW THAT YOU CAN ONLY USE "NGK" AND Volvo spark plugs... try this, its only gona run you about 15 bucks...

it could be your ignition switch. does it stall as the car heats up?
dunno where you are from, wait till the summer and park it outside when it's +30C.. see if you will be able to start it :-)
