if you are trying to reduce fat (geta six pack or have a thin waist), you are attempting to spot reduce. Spot reduction is a fallacy and although info-mericals want you to believe differently, it is the hard truth.
if you want great exercises that will strengthen the core group(Abs, Obliques and lowerback), check out the book Body Sculpting Bible for Abs. i think the book has a man's version and a woman's version - they are the same but whatever!

Regular crunches are great to build muscle in your abdominals, but to avoid love handles you need to include the obliques, which are the muscle groups on each side of your stomach. One effective, easy exercise to work your obliques is a regular crunch with a twist: When you raise your shoulders off the floor, twist your body so that your left elbow almost touches your right knee, and vice versa, before slowly coming down again.
Walking fast or running is cardiovascular exercise, which will burn more calories, and if you keep your stomach muscles tight and swing your arms, it works your obliques as well as your abs.
Try to get at least 30 minutes of cardio at least 3 times a week, and try to include a weight-lifting routine to your schedule a few days a week, too. Combined with a low-calorie diet, you will be surprised how fast your commitment will pay off. Good luck!

Weighted situps. Do situps on a decline bench and hold a weight across your chest. Also the ab machines are good since they add more resistance to your abs then you can from doing just regular sit ups. You might be able to find more tips on stomach workouts at http://fitnessarticles.excellentabc.com . They have good fitness articles there.
Hope this helps
