it might be a sign of appreciation. Maybe it feels good when you pat him on the back...if he could talk, I bet he would agree with me..lol

If he's neutered he is no longer a tom cat. Cats tend to throw their heads back then lick down the front of thier chests when they are in extreme pain or pleasure (in other word it's the same reaction that you get when you hit your funny bone or get kneed in the groin/punched in the breast.... it could be arthritis... but ask your vet.

I'm not sure about tom cats but when a female cat is in season taping her back above the tail stimulates her for sex with a tom cat,perhaps your tom likes it to? : )

Even though he is fixed you are stroking him in the area of his reproductive area, and you are not really exciting the cat, but it is a very sensitive spot for the cat. Some cats love to be petted there, which it seems your cat does, and some hate it. Your cat is just reacting happily and showing his pleasure.

he doesn't want his butt touched and will bite whatever's touching him if it doesn't stop. if you were subjected to a thermometer up your bum every time you went to the doctor, wouldn't you be a little gunshy about someone petting your rear?
