How come when people are in line at the bank or grocery store, they have to stand so close to the person in front of them? I like to keep my distance from people and when someone is standing so close behind me that I would bump into them if I move slightly it makes me sick! Don't you prefer to keep your distance from the person in front of you?

I'm the same way. I hate it when people invade my space. It's not like their going to move faster through the line up if they stand really close to me. I don't breath down your neck, so don't breath down mine.

Perhaps they are afraid of losing their place in line. Some people cut...

Different cultures have different space issues. As an American in the UK, I normally think that's why I have more of a desire for elbow room. But some Americans also seem to be too close in certain places (maybe because they're from crowded cities?).

I prefer to keep my distance to. Sometimes being too distant nerves people too (they think that they smell or something).

One thing I do is wear a backpack. That way at least it's my backpack bumping into them and not me.

I don't like it either Sometimes I start acting like i'm going to fall backwards and sometimes it works. But it depends on if there are people closely behind them or not. I prefer distance as well. But if there is a ton of people there anyways and you can't help it there is nothing you can do. But if there is start acting angry or coughing or do something to get there attention so they don't stand right behind you. It usually works. Maybe put your foot behind you so that way the person doesn't stand "Right" behind you and it will establish that distance.

Don't like it either. If a shopping cart is not required, I usually have a book of puzzles or magazine and keep back.

If the person behind me stands to close, I turn around and stare. They usually back away a little. If they ask what the problem is, I tell them their breath is unpleasant.

* I too don't like it when stangers stand so close. As a teacher and a mother I taught the children to abide by the 6 inch rule... I also get grossed out when someone near me coughts or sneezes in public... yuck.

I've heard somewhere that the Japanese keep a distance from each other when greeting, mainly because they don't want to bump heads when they bow. Then again italians kiss each other. I guess it depends what culture you're in.

Maybe you smell nice, or the people to the other side of them smells really bad? :)

And I've had the same question myself. I realize that it's human nature to try to get closer to the front of the line, even if it doesn't actually mean they are closer to being served.

I hate it when they're close, when they stare, and especially when they make comments about the contents of my grocery cart "You must really like strawberries! Do you like soymilk?"...I just want to fire back "Are your hemeriods getting any better, maybe you should change toilet paper". People need to respect other peoples space.

Yes I prefer that. It's called the magic of shopping carts.
