3) He has to die (I know it's kind of weird, but hear me out. he is an orphan so his mother must be dead. So one COULD assume that the river symbolizes the gap between life and death. Therefore, we could also assume that the bridge symbolizes the process of dieing. So in order for him to be with his mom again he would have to "cross the bridge", or in other words, die. I know that's really weird but it kind of made sense to me.)
