I can hear sound from the video, but it has an 'x' beside the title and on the screen, it is black. Do I need to download a codec or something like that?

You need to install this Xvid codec for AVI movied s compressed with DivX or Xvid. If it it a downloaded movie then this is what you need:

Yes if you hear sound and cant see video it is a codec problem.

Its nothing to do with Windows Vista or Media Player. Avi files can be encoded with certain encoders. When an error pops up media player might say what encoder is missing.

Mostly the encoder might cost you some dough or if it from a unreliable source then might be a virus.

2 possible reasons.

# 1. Windows Vista in its current state stinks. Wait for the next version of Vista. Problems are all around the board with the current version. Programs not being able to run or run correctly.

# 2. goto http://divx.com and download the Codecs and player from that site. Could help.

no, it potential which you do not have the formats mandatory to play that avi document. i notably propose Ace Mega Codec p.c.. because of the fact this is the main finished i've got chanced on so some distance. Why in the international could u use homestead windows Vista fairly of XP is previous me, because of the fact the bugginess of Vista is unquestionably widespread. i'm no longer able to enhance to vista till they fix each and all of the stuff incorrect with it, and there is plenty, beginning with the direct x 10 compatibility subject concerns, and ending with formats etc etc. utilising that codec p.c.. i cautioned could desire to repair ur avi document undertaking, yet homestead windows Vista sux complicated imo. reinstall homestead windows XP if u opt for all your video games and courses to run. there are too many incompatibility subject concerns in vista, and imo having a three-D shifting historic past, and a nicer interface isn't nicely well worth the hassle yet.

Sounds like the file you are trying to play is a DIVX avi file. Without the DIVX codec you can not view the video. go to the DIVX website download the codec and then you will be fine.

AVIs typically require a codec. You are right.

divx and xvid are the most common.

Good luck!
