The AK-47 is a pretty good rifle. You can throw it in the mud then come back a week later, rinse it off and start shooting the problem is you just have a hard time hitting things with it. I like a .50 caliber for long range, power and penetration and as far as accuracy, well one was used by a Marine to make a kill 2 miles away. Lets see any other rifle do that. The big problem with them is they're so damn heavy it take two people to carry one rifle and it's ammo.

No matter what the M16A2 is the best. I still use 1 in the military even if given the choice of an M4 I find it too small and inconsistent which is why the Army has all the bells and whistles add-ons just give me a bi-pod or not and I will get the Kill every time.

Actually, the H&K 416 is much better than the M16-M4 series. it has a better operating system that gets rid of the infamous unrelaibility of the M16 (jamming, fouling, etc.)

It is now being used as a replacement for the M16/M4 for Spec Ops Operators. and they just rave about it!

Read this article on the differences. truly a great rifle! you get to keep the low recoil and high accuracy of the M16 and it is just as rugged as the legendary AK-47

best infantary rifle based on performance price would have to be one of theses three the m4 , g36, orr the israily travor due to the cheap ness general accurasy, i wouldnt put the ak series because for a moderen infantary rifle they just dont have long range accuarssy their for the soldier will be old gunned at long ranges,
i would have put the sa80 a2 down for reliablity and accurasy but its to expensive and heavy so i left it out.

Best infantry rifle,
The one that hits where you aim.
Being old I want to fire from a long range away if ever such a need came into being.
I have a Savage police model-300 winchester mag and same rifle in 308 with McMillian stock, Sheppard Scope and can hit bowling pins at over 600 meters everytime and at 1000 once spotted even on windy day 5 out of six.
Close in any of the m-16 varients will do just fine. Close in like 300 meters for the cheapies, to almost 500 12" circle. $600 for a passable chrome lined barrel.
Quick to reload and as one stays away from cheap ammo, ss or old brass penatrator rounds and no varnished import junk almost completley reliable.
An sk's is cheap can still find fixed twenty round Chicom magazines, stripper clips for fast reload at under 200. buy one with chrome barrel for around 200. With good ammo, I handload, 2.5" circle at 200 meters, by pod with cheap chicom scope 4X. with buffer and slight rework able to fire 40 rounds a minute accurately.Ammo sometimes less than 100 bucks for 880 rounds.
Aks more expensive have hard to remove replace magazine unless reworkd for around 350 but same round as SK, by a yugo Sk best out there, and yugo or any soviet bloc ak before chicom. milled reciver best but then cost more.
Used Ruger mini fourteeen, preferabley not a ranch rifle but earlier versions. used 250 fires up to 30 round mags I know a guy has a 90 rounder and can find same in M-16 and Aks' can by bull pup stock so overall elngth is around 26-28", fires cheap import 223 rounds, $200 per one thousand, cheap chicom or weaver scope out to 300 yards 6-8 inches, chest width from center for kill shot. and with a little fiddling 1"at 100 meters. With buffer, trigger work, and fixture of barrell crowned a bit cost is still around 350 to 4. cheaper than a m-16 varient and just as accurate for close in work.
No matter the weapon leave the cowboy stuff alone learn the rifle wind effects camoflage of oneself, the limits of weapon and especially of oneself.
Having a lot of bullets in a magazine does not mean easy to hit target .
My personal choice for a carry weapon if on a contract would be my AR 10A4, .308/ 7.62mm at just over 1250 bucks. Civilain version semi cammo stock or even their od green.
Remember accuracy is best rifle. surplus ammo cheap and round is a tckdriver and hard hitter.
best battle rifle today if nto fighting military with armor like us forces have is different chioce than fighting pip squeak lightly armed dinkos with worn out aks and no armor on body. Remember accuracy counts especially if going against body armor.Tactical situations vary and HKs run gamut of all even super nines.
9mms not good overall infantry weapons, lots of firepower most are overly expensive for what you get in hitting pwoer is weak , unless you can get some cookie cutter rounds

AK-47 is reliable and tough but very inaccurate at a distance

Had I been given the chance to choose between any weapon
available, I would have picked the M-1 carbine. It was light weight,
accurate and indestructible.
