Using a razor gives a stylist a little more control for creating precise layers.

The down side is that the razor cuts some hair shafts at an angle, leaving the ends thinner and weaker. However, if a scissor is run through the hair, it can cause similar damage.

Whether or not this is a serious problem, depends on how thick and healthy the hair shaft is before the cut.

I like lots of layers cut in my hair for volume. When he uses a razor, the ends of the hair curl and look frizzy, which I hate. I prefer scissors because the ends lays smoother, and the finished style looks better. It probably works on some hair though. I don't know about 'damage' other than if it's not done properly it might cause damage.

Haircuts using razors do have a higher tendency to lead to split ends and damaged hair. This is because of angle at which the hair is cut. I'd say stick to scissors because they make your hair look healthier and more evenly cut (less straggly ends).
