The reason I ask is from reading statements from former followers of islam on the following website http://www.faithfreedom.org/Articles/sina/slayingislam.htm. I don't see how a religion that seems to have no tolerance for anyone but muslims (men mostly) can have a democratic government. There is something about a father killing his own daughter for being seen with a man in public without permission. This is a classic honour killing, which is apparantly a custom throughout the middle east. How can these archaic ideals exist within a working democracy?

The problem is not with Islam as a religion , if you learn about the true Islam you will see that is a peaceful religion , the problem is with the persons who do the bad things in the name of Islam .
As for the website faithfreedom , This website is against Islam , so do you think that they will show you the positive things and real Islam ??.
As for fathers killing their daughters for being seen with a man in a public place , this not true as i never hared of such cases , but hared of a stories about daughters and wives being killed after being caught sleeping with a guy , and also this has nothing to do with Islam , this is due to believes that this action will bring disgrace to the father or to the husband , and this happens not only in the middle east or among Muslims but all over the world .

The answer is straight. Childhood prejudices die hard. Play this back in your subconcious - when a Christian or a Jew kills someone religion is not mentioned, but when Muslim is charged with a crime, it is Islam that goes to trial. When any Muslim makes a mistake or treats people in a bad manner - people say "Islam is the reason".
Without looking to the tradition of Islam, people believe what the newspapers say. But question what the Quran says!

Democratic government has nothing to do with islam, u r right, islamic form of rulling is khalifat. Democracy isn't islamic. Father killing his muslim daughter is nonsence, it is absolutely forbidden in islam.

The problem with their countries is as you said. They are customs and traditions that have nothing to do with Islam. Islam does not support honour killing. Many of the horrid customs they have were there before Islam and they distorted Islam to fit their own beliefs. If you go to the website Islamonline.net, many people have asked questions like this and the muslim scholars firmly agree that customs like this are condemned and should be stopped.

Islam forbids these "honor killings". They are a cultural leftover from the days prior to Islam.
There is no contradiction between democracy and Islam, and Islam teaches that all men and woman of all races and cultures are equal before God, that the only difference which will be judged are the people's intentions and deeds.

Okay now you are mixing a religion with culture......I won't give a lecture on Women rights in islam which is definitely much more than any other religion, But would simply add that if peoples stop following this faithfreedom crap, they would be able to know actual islam.......But ~~ Sigh~~~

Yes, there is something about a father killing his own daughter for dating some man. Its called manic violence.
And to be honest, its not even close to being religious. Its cultural tendency.
Why? Because there are villages in Indonesia who are Islamic but their culture is so different, their women control everything, including asking for the mans hand ^^ instead of the other way around.

Why would peace come only with a Democracy? And why can't Democracy work as well with archaic Islam as it does with archaic Christianity? Christians have been killing each other for... well... centuries now, and it hasn't prevented the ultimate development of our Republic (often confused with a Democracy...)
