In Christian meetings, in accordance with 1 Corinthians 11:5 - 16, what would be your reaction, please ? And why ? Thanks in advance for all replies. May the Lord bless you all.

Thanks for your reply. So what do you have to say about 1 Corinthians 11, please ? I would be interested to hear your comments on this section of God's word.
Blessings to you, sister.

For the record, my personal opinion of the scripture is this -
The passage in 1 Corinthians obviously teaches the principle of male headship, and female submission to that headship. This principle is taught throughout the NT. Female submission to male headship is applicable to both church & family situations (1 Timothy 2:11 - 14, Ephesians 5:22 - 24). This is God's ordination, not man's. In arguing for male leadership among the church, Paul refers the reader of 1 Timothy not to a cultural custom, but to the beginning of God's creation. Verse 13 says, "Adam was formed first, then Eve". Woman was made for the man, not the other way around. However, Galatians 3:28 says that in Christ there is no male or female. Does this mean that gender distinctions (and hierarchy) are abolished ? Of course not, for this would contradict what God's word says elsewhere. The point is that man & woman are SPIRITUALLY equal in Christ...

...but God in His wisdom has ordained that there should be an order of rank in His creation. Don't we Christians believe that Christ is essentially equal with God ? Yet for the purpose of fulfilling God's will, Christ submitted Himself to the Father & took upon Himself the form of a servant, right ?
Should women wear headcoverings in church meetings, or is it just the underlying principle which is important ? Personally, I'm not sure. However, the Bible says women should, and if I was a woman I think I would probably err on the side of caution & wear one, rather than risk grieving the Lord. I wouldn't want to risk rationalising God's word, even in light of the 'cultural argument' . Of course, what is ultimately important is whether a believer (male or female) has a submissive heart, right ? Wearing a headcovering will not magically transform a rebellious heart into a submissive one. With all due respect, I think that some of the answers here have been quite revealing. Do we perhaps..

..need to bring ourselves to the Lord and ask Him to highlight any rebellious inclination that there might be within us, particularly in regard to submission to authority ?
If a godly, Bible - believing Pastor seeks to implement the practice of something clearly delineated in the apostolic doctrine of the NT - regardless of argument concerning cultural context - would it be more appropriate to lovingly submit to his authority on the matter, or to protest and perhaps even leave the church ? I'm not talking about submitting to legalistic man - made rules here, I'm talking about NT doctrine from an apostle of God. I'm curious as to why so sisters would strenuously object to wearing a hat or a headscarf ? I don't wish to offend - but rather - challenge. Could it be that this objection is a symptom of a deeper, heart problem ? Blessings.

PS For the record, I'm not a misogynist. I enjoy fellowship with sisters very much. I just want to see God's word obeyed and His name glorified.

People have mentioned about listening to the Holy Spirit on this issue, but isn't all scripture "God - breathed" ?

I would argue that this may well have been one of those examples of the culture of the times, rather than a timeless command. However, there is something in the Bible about not making the pastor's job hard, and being obedient to those God has put above you, so if my pastor could show me why he believed it to be important, and I could not politely refute his reasoning, I would do it. And pray that god would show us the truth.

When I became a Christian I attended a church where the majority of women wore hats, so I joined in. However, it seemed to be more a 'fashion parade'. I don't think that that is relevant to being a Christian. I have been a member of a different church for some years now and the women do not wear hats/headcovering unless it is very cold! We wear mostly casual clothes, nothing fussy. If our leader were to announce we had to wear headcovering, we would wonder why. I don't think anyone would oblige.
However, if I were to attend another church for a particular reason and it was normal for women to wear headcovering, then I might wear something out of respect.

I would tell him that Christ , and then my husband is the only covering I need... I respect the church leaders, but i do not 'conform' to their ideals unless God convicts me of this on my own... There are many rules that 'churches' decide to lay down... (wear dresses, no makeup, hair in bun, headcovering ) but I stand on the Word of God alone, and if a church doesnt like how I worship/pray/live as a Christian, then it is time for a different church...
added: 1 corinth 13-16
Judge for yourselves. Is it right for a woman to pray to God in public without covering her head? 14 Isn’t it obvious that it’s disgraceful for a man to have long hair? 15 And isn’t long hair a woman’s pride and joy? For it has been given to her as a covering. 16 But if anyone wants to argue about this, I simply say that we have no other custom than this, and neither do God’s other churches.
since the last verse says 'we have no other custom than this' then I take that to say, whatever the custom is in the day/age you are in, is what is required by God... the first verse says "Judge for yourselves'... and I have to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance in this and every area. God doesnt require garments or man made coverings... if our husbands are not Godly men, then Christ is our covering. otherwise our husbands are... it is one of those things that you really have to seek God in... seek His will... If my husband asked me to wear a covering, I would probably do that, as to respect and honor him.... but not a pastor... The holy spirit can guide you thru this

Hello sister, i agree with livingintheword...the absolute points i agree with are: it was their custom at the time and not one of God's commands...2nd point: Paul says "choose for yourself" in the NIV.
I remember when this was pointed out to me after visiting a church where a hat was being passed round for the women when they wanted to pray. I asked my friend and she said read it and ask The Lord, so i read the chapter to understand the context in which it was written and clearly i knew it was not necessary to cover my head..
listen to your heart, the Holy Spirit, the still small voice within, and keep living in the freedom our Lord Jesus gave us through the cross....love and blessings...

Head covering is hair. and yes, I keep hair on my head.
Culteral knowledge from that time and place is the key to understanding this part of Pauls letter to the Church at Corinth.
It was a pagen culture for women to shave their heads and for men to wear their hair long in direct opposition to the Jewish culture of women with long hair and men with short.
Paul was telling the new believers, both Jewish and formally pagen that they should not only look different from the nonbelieving world, but they should also act differently.
Women were to cover their heads, no more shaving off of the hair as was commonly practiced among the pagen society, and men should not look like or dress like women. Meaning do not let your hair grow and be worn as a woman does.
This whole letter from Paul dealt with the merging of two very different cultures who now had a common bond of believing in Jesus Christ as the Messiah.

Dear Beloved,
If one believe that the Holy Bible is the Word of God, one has to obey it. According to my faith, whatever told by Paul the Apostle in 1 Corinthians it is from the Lord. Therefore we have to obey and we should not argue with God.
If somebody feels it is Paul's personal opinion let him/her do as they like. (But in such a case they would mean that The Holy Bible is not the Word of God.)
God Bless You too.

The scripture is spiritually discerned to mean that Christians (women for the most part) are to have a covering or a headship/leader over them for spiritual growth. God the Father is the most high of all leadership in the Kingdom of God but He wants us to have a consecrated leader/head of God household in the earth to glean the revelation of His word from.

I'm neither so feel free not to listen, but anytime a religion or "leader" dictates clothing, dietary habits and other non-consequential trivialities, I worry about its authenticity.
I should rephase that to "I strongly doubt that its based in a shred of reality".

Oh wow I would say your church is a bit strict if they did that. I would not go to one as strict . I dont feel that God expects us to do that that is old law. All he expects of us is to call on him and to trust him and to Love him with all our hearts not to be under a law of strict rules like no dancing, no wearing pants, no short hair i mean come on he wants us to live and to be happy not to be confined. I love the Lord with all my heart and I know that he knows I do. I pray and speak with him and ask of his forgiveness thats all that is required and passing along his word to friends and loved ones. May God bless you as well!!!!
