I am planning a dinner for my husband who has been away for two weeks.
I was thinking on making Crab Cakes as the main dish, but do not know what to compliment them with.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated or if you think i should make then as an apetiser instead of a main dish... what do i make for the main dish?

Thank you

I gave you a star for thinking this one out in advance.....very good question, and some great answers, but here's one from a some one who has a culinary degree:

First, serve them as the main dish: Crab is kind of tricky to mate accompaniments (read: side dishes) with, as you don't want to "fight" with the delicate and sweet taste of the crab, which a lot of things can overwhelm....The first answer recommended that you serve an aioli (garlicky mayonnaise) with it, which sounds good, but the garlic is going to be a strong overtone that is going to drown (no pun intended) out the taste of the crab.....And at a premium price, you don't want that delicious delicate taste to go to waste......My recommondations?? A dry white wine to drink, think of a Sauvignon Blanc, the sides that would be best suited for the compliment to the crab cakes: peas with pearl onions in butter and a nice homemade cole slaw.........bread would be redudnant, because you use bread crumbs in the crab cakes as a binder........Hope this helps......Enjoy, your guy is lucky to have a partner as caring as you!!! :)

A nice aioli sauce is good with crab cakes, a good sour dough bread, cole slaw or salad with a vinegrette and gorgonzola cheese is always nice. Use them as a main dish if you want a lighter supper. Crab cakes are also good accompaning something like a sirloin steak or fillet mignon (sort of a surf and turf thing!), in which you might consider a salad, baked potatoe and light dessert.

Main dish for sure... big FAT crab cakes. I would serve grilled corn on the cob (cooked in husk of course), a twice baked potato and a small tomato salad tossed in light mayo. Maybe do oysters for an appetizer. If I were him, I'd be most appreciate a simple, hearty, man's dish. Being away for 2 weeks, I'd want something to give me some energy for later on that evening.

I went to a restaurant & they served fried green tomatoes with them... Best combination by far. Also eat the crab cakes w/ remoulade sauce. Yum! 😋

Crab cakes are a good main dish. You can serve them, with cole slaw and some kind of veggie that has a lot of color in it. Yummy!

crab cakes are an excellent main dish. I serve them with cocktail sauce, fresh lemon wedges, steamed new potatoes, asparagus with parmesen cheese, and a salad and fresh bread with butter Perhaps you could serve a shrimp cocktail as a starter.

I eat my crab cakes with a knife and fork typically. The smaller ones are manageable with only a fork.

Brilliant. Those nasty crab cakes are going to give you the trots anyway, so why not just save the time of running to the toilet.

I eat 'em with my fingers.

Serve them with white rice pilaf, pita bread, a light salad with italian dressing, and white wine.
