is it too much to accept that we are not the center of the universe?
That which the dream shows is the shadow of such wisdom as exists in man, even if during his waking state he may know nothing about it... We do not know it because we are fooling away our time with outward and perishing things, and are asleep in regard to that which is real within ourself.

Bill Mac and charisma - I'll type slowly for you ... I'm not talking about the "sprit of god" enlightenmet, the bible prevents you from believeing in certain things, and i'm sure similarities can be found in all the various people who have proclaimed them selves deities (and the list is long) ... I'm talking about enlightenment as in the dali-lama, the dao, or even quantum physics
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity...and I'm not sure about the universe.

~~~phlonius,,,, Respectfully, because this is not The Objective according to their tenets. They believe in a Single Lifetime, giving one this single opportunity to Submit to a Vengeful God(hell) and accept this notion with an uninquiring mind, thus surrending The Freewill to Dogmatic Obeyence. This is absolutely contrary to Enlightenment. This "Ultimate Goal" is found and summed up in one of their Catchphrases, "Let go, Let God". Note: Science has irrefuteably proven, contrary to Christian Scripture, that earth is not even the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, and even the MWG isn't the center of The Universe. (I hope I wasn't "Preaching to the choir.",,,, nice quote you shared,,, I hope you read a lot and study the works of those Great Minds who challenged Religious Authority.) ~ Namaste`
I think you assume too much. Having gone down several paths,
enlightenment and mysticism is what lead me to Christianity. I find that Jesus IS the way, and the truth I was seeking, and that life has become more than I could ever imagined through Him. Life is too short to miss the real thing. Cross those lines you've drawn and gain a true perspective. A half hearted venture is like sailing, but never loosing sight of the shore. The greatest adventure of all lay just beyond that horizon. God bless.
Aren't your two question contradictions? If enlightenment is from within, yet humans are NOT the center of the universe then there is no enlightenment. If we are "god" or the source of our own enlightenment we HAVE to be the center of our own universe. However, if God is the source of "enlightenment" then He is the center of the universe and we must be humbled before Him who created us! This would make us not the center of the universe.
I would suggest that those believing in personal enlightenment are creating their own gods. Anything that merely comes from our own finite minds is also finite - it will perish once we perish. God, however, is infinite and cannot be understood in our own minds alone - He was not created by mere human thought processes but exists regardless of if we believe in Him or not.
If we believe in enlightenment we must be the center of the universe, because enlightenment cannot exist without that.
Stop looking at the religion. The religion itself is the doctrine and rituals instituted by that religion. Look instead at the people. Do they even really follow their own doctrine? In Christianity we are taught to teach or preach the Gospel in love. We are to expect that people will reject the Gospel and ridicule us for our beliefs. If people reject the Gospel we are to leave them to their own devices. God does not interfere with free will an neither should any one else! Christians are just called to pray for those that reject Jesus. I don't know about any other religion.
It is not any religion that holds one back from enlightenment, but the individual's interpritation of the religion that prevents it.
You can have enlightenment with western religion, but you must be ready/open for enlightenment.
Jesus' teachings are quite alike to those of buddah. But you must be enlightened to truely see that.
Because to have enlightenment in America, you would need a transparent government (not gonna happen), a transparent banking system (not gonna happen), and a transparent relationship with the rest of the world (not gonna happen).
Western religions hold people back from enlightenment so the religions can maintain control over people's lives. If people were enlightened they might start thinking for themselves, or "outside the box".
