I live in Australia and sometimes when I watch American shows they someone drank a fith (5th) what does that mean and how much alcohol is that.

We don't have "fifths" anymore. They've been replaced by the metric 750 ml bottle.
A fifth measured 4/5's of a quart, not 1/5 of a gallon, however.

A fifth is an old measuring device as explained by many other answers. It is indeed 1/5 of a gallon, which works out to 4/5 of a quart.

a fifth is an obsolete term in the US. It used to mean 4/5 of a quart. the US is now on the meteric system, for alcohol at least.
