Tori,
If you haven't done much dating, then consider going out with a bunch of people. That way you can say, "Marcia and Danny and Pedro and Kendra and I are going to go get pizza on Saturday afternoon and then go watch the hockey game. I thought it would be fun to have you along."
That way you can find out if he is into you or if he is looking around and not really worth your time.

Use the phrase "hang out".
Say, "Hey, I was thinking that you and I should hang out sometime".
This makes it easy for him...and he's not nervous because it isn't TECHNICALLY a date. And you didn't technically ask him out on a date either, you just mentioned that you should hang out sometime. It puts everyone at ease.
