Running is better. But if you have knee or ankle problems then swimming would be best. Here is a chart that shows you how many calories you burn.

Hope this helps!

As answered below running is a better fat burner but puts a lot of stess on the body/joints . swimming is an all body work out and great for muscle tone . Cycling and rowing at a higher resistance are good alternatives to running .

It's completely dependant on the person. I'm not a swimmer, so when I try and swim it's not an efficient workout for me because I haven't practiced breathing and form, but for a swimmer to go run would cause a lot of pain because they haven't built up the little supportive muscles in thier joints. If both are equally easy/hard for you then why not consider switching off and doing both.

Running is better for burning fat. Swimming is better for muscle tone, but not by much. I would advise running.

Swimming. It's not only easier on the joints, but it works more muscle groups than running.

I don't know of any swimmers having knee replacements because they stressed their joints while exercising! Running will eventually hurt your knees and back....then you will have to quit and wind up swimming anyway! I swim 3 miles a week and love every minute of it! Be sure to learn proper breathing and stroking technique before jumping in the water.

Swimming is a better all-around exercise, and it's much easier on your joints. Running is hard on the knees, hips and feet.

Swimming - less impact on the joints and a full body workout.

Swimming is best and its the most strenuous because more of your muscles are being worked out.
