I'm going to be commuting around 30 miles one way on a bike - however, I will also be carrying a heavy rucksack - E.g. with books, laptop, water plus some bike accesories......I feel that this isn't a good idea as I find it quite heavy through walking let alone cycling! Any tips of how I could still carry all this while still maintaining a comfortable ride at good speed ?

If you put a common bike carrier on then fit it with a pvc coated wire onion/potato rack. This stops stray handles, straps etc finding there way to the spokes. Your rucksack will drop straight in and you can hold it in place with an elastic strap or old belt.

Wrap some foam around your laptop

Rather than a rucksack, you could buy a small trailer or panniers for your bike? A heavy bag is going to be bad for your posture and your balance.

You used to be able to get a basket for the front of a bike and one that fitted on the back. Perhaps you still can or maybe you could adapt something. I used to have a freezer basket fitted on the back of mine.

First you should have a hybrid bike with paniers for bags carriers. It much more comfortable if the bike carry the loads instead toyour back. Also a touring or hybrid bike is much lighter than a mountain bike.

Definately panniers. Spread the weight equally between the bags. Halfords do them in the UK, have also seen them on Ebay
Good luck!

A trailer or panniers would be better, it would lower you center of gravity for better balance. Any extra weight will slow you down, but even with a trailer, you won't be breaking any speed records!

Panniers were once the fashion.
