i recently acquired a shotgun and wanted to know how i could go about checking the serial number on it to make sure its not hot, or anything. is there a website that i can go to? or should i contact the police department? and also do you have to register a shot gun in the state of Nebraska?

I agree with Eric. However, it is probably not "hot" if you bought it from a reputable gun dealer. If you bought it from someone of the street, it may be hot. I hope you have receipts etc. so that you can use these if it's to help get your money back.

Austrailia has a database that is searchable by everyday people but here in the USA you have to check with the ATF. Or your local authoritys if they feel like helping you. And The database probably doesn't cover guns over a certain age.

I will post a link.
