I have recently joined the gym and i need a workout which takes an hour or more. It must:
1) help me lose weight and keep it off
2) get muscley

Hey, I just joined a gym too. I'm working with a personal trainer and he worked out a plan for me where I alternate between cardio and strength training. It might be worthwhile to check if your gym offers these types of services. That way you get a customized plan based on your specific goals.

Mars bar and chips 3 times a day then hit the gym with heavy weights while on the treadmill!

The American College of Sports Medicine offers guidelines for cardiovascular, flexibility and resistance training. The guidelines are flexible enough to allow you to pick your own exercises but have enough structure to get you going when you first start out. They are pretty easy to follow and will make your workout easier and more efficient.

If you want it to be just one exercise, then hop on an elliptical or treadmill. If you are looking for more then one exercise, then 45min of cardio, and using the weight machines for every muscle group.
