None of the above answers are confirmed by the rail travel search engines. These recommend London Euston to either Stockport or Chester (it depends on what time you want to travel) and changing at either of those for Knutsford. The journey time is around three hours. I looked at departures from 10am onwards and there are 5 services between 10.05 and 12.05 (one of which, I admit, requires changes at both Crewe and Chester)

virgin train from euston to manchester piccadilly. (they run very regularly and if you book in advance you can get ticket for 12.50 one way). this takes 2hrs 15mins.from piccadilly you get the metrolink(overground tram system) to sale in cheshire - journey time about 20 mins and cost is around 2.30. from sale you can get a bus to knutsford for 1.80 single which will take about thirty minutes in off peak traffic. (the buses are very frequent in sale and the timetables are signed everywhere).
hope this helps?
