Try doing a search and some reading on public health and specifically epidemiology. Epidemiology is concerned with epidemics, of course, but it also investigates the reasons diseases occur and spread. Why do kids in the South Bronx get a lot of asthma? How do droughts and floods affect the spread of disease? How has global warming allowed certain mosquito bourne diseases to move northward?

I imagine this is a field where you would always be needed.

I suggest you save people from diseases, because you seem more like a people person to me.

If you consider them to be equivalent then you should save the environment.

Saving the environment helps the environment but does not help or hurt people.

Saving people helps people, but hurts the environment (through added population.)
