For me spontaneous is always best.

I love spontaneous. The reaction on people's faces are the greatest... and i love that. Some ask me "what is this for" and i tell them because i love them, or because they are a great friend. I don't need to be told when to give a gift that way.

I like spontaneous because the person you are giving the gift to is more surprised. Everyone expects something, if just a card on a birthday or at Christmas.

I actually like doing both. Sometimes other spntaneous things are fun as well.
Example: Last night skiving off from uni work, I got the idea to have an impromptu dinner. Two of us bought the food, two mates cooked, and we invited one mate's parents.
When the parents refused their son, somone called (me in particular)and let the mum know how much we could appreciate their appearance. I also told her call it a "get one up party" for all the times she had given us Christmas and other dinners.
All in all, eight people all because someone said "let's have a go at it." Why not have a Tuesday night bash just because we could.
Two older people enjoying talking with younger people who actually think older individuals have interesting things to say.
If our lot is odd, we stand by the thought that no one said it is nice to be normal.

Spontaneous gifts definitely they are bought because you care about the person and want to make them smile. Crimbo and bday pressies are often people buying to receive.

I feel too much gift (tangible items) giving creates high expectations. The gift of consistent love, affection, praise, and understanding are good everyday. The very sporadic gift giving is a bonus and very nice surprise. It makes true emotion more meaningful when you gift a small gift with it. Like I said, "too much is not good" Good luck!
