Hello, just wanted to know from anyone who has a Boxer dog or knows about them. What is their temperment? How are they with kids? What are pros and cons of having them? I have heard that they are a great family pet. I am not ready for one just yet, because I know how much work dogs are. I just don't have enough time to spend training one yet.. But within a few years we will most likely get one. I'm not looking for real serious answers just opinions and maybe a story or two as to how they are. Thanks!

I've been owned by Boxers for 40 years. They are wonderful companions and very intelligent dogs. Boxers physically mature at about 18 months however their attitude and playfulness is that of a puppy well into adulthood. I notice most of my Boxers have true puppy attitude until about 3 years old. Boxer puppies take a lot of persistent and consistent positive training. They are indoor dogs .Due to their short muzzles and short coats they cannot physically handle extreme temperatures. If you ever allow a Boxer in your bed or lap as a puppy you will end up with a 10 year old 65lb lap and bed hog later in life.LOL. Boxers can be very challenging but are the absolute best companion and friend you can choose in a dog....in my opinion.

I recently bought a boxer pup called George who is now 6mths old. Hes great companion and very loyal dog, but at times he can be very giddy and over excited which is expected from the boxer breed. They have a great personality but need to have an active lifestyle and lots of exercise. There temperment is great but you have to let them know who's boss from the beginning. They are great with kids and are a good family pet. Most of all they are absolutely mad and will always be the joker of the house. I hope you consider a boxer.

W. has a great response but I would like to add that they are an athletic breed and would not be suitable for a couch potato or even walk around the block lifestyle. My old co-worker and her husband are both long-distance runners and have two boxers as their "children." The breed is perfect for them. Kane the older is very mellow and a momma's boy type. Loki the younger is the independant one and thinks it's his duty to protect the family. Kane has a meriad of food allergies and therefore is on a strict and expensive diet, which is not uncommon among Boxers. Here is a site with general personality traits and tempermant information...

I had a Boxer named Sassy I bottle fed her and she lived to be 13 years old and they say that is good for a Boxer, they are very smart dogs, Mine would sit in the front seat of the car and I could put the seat belt on her and she would stay there, they really think they are lap dogs, and they love being with their family all the time and they are bed hogs that snore! As with any dog they need to be raised around children to be good with them. Of course the time we had her she was the kid. You will enjoy this breed. Right now I have 2 English Bulldogs.

My parents breed boxers and now my children as well have been adopted by one. These dogs are VERY family oriented and I can tell you from experience, they are very loyal. My husband and I can not even wrestle with one of the kids without him barking and trying to seperate us. They are also very active though and need enough space and time to work out some of their energy. IMHO, I'd say these are probably the best dogs to have in your family.

We have a brother and sister set of boxers in our neighborhood. They seem to be happy, friendly dogs, beautifully marked. I've seen some at the dog park too and they have been the same way. What you should do is get some books and research them. You can go online but, it's nice to have the books to keep checking on and they're a pleasure to read and look through.
