Genesis : 10
24 And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber.

1 Chronicles : 1
18 And Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber.

Till this moment, no problem as long as we consider "Salah" and "Shelah" the same person, BUT:

Luke : 3
35 Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala, (3:35-36)
"Sala which was the son of Cainan."
Who was Salah's father?
36 Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,

Now the question:
Who was Salah's or Shelah's father?
and Who is Cainan?

what does it really matter?...the problem is we tend to view such things as reality instead of a guide to a moral and just way of living

Some folks say that Canaan and Cainan are the same person. In Genesis 9:20-25, where Noah curses Canaan for what appears to be Ham's transgression of not turning away from Noah's nakedness, it is believed that Canaan lay with someone in Noah's household, and because Noah was drunk, he couldn't defend his household. Canaan means 'humiliated' - Cainan is believed to be his name prior to being cursed for his actions, which means 'fixed'.

This act also means that both Canaan and Aphraxad could have been the fathers of Shelah/Salah - one biological, and the other adoptive, having married the woman defiled by Cainan / Canaan.

So, Shelah / Salah had an adoptive father and biological father. Cainan is Canaan, with him taking on the name Canaan after being cursed by Noah.

How about something crazy! Try this.

When I think of genealogy of the first five books, I cannot help think of how Cain got married in the land of Nod. If we do not reconcile the fact of Cain's marriage occurring before Adam's number 3 Seth is born we will never be able to answer your question. In fact in 500BC (Nebuchadnezzar's time) the fairly young Jewish faith was about to be destroyed and forgotten; or so it seemed to them. And in desperation they were compelled to compile all their sacred writings; Isaiah, Ezec,etc.. for the purpose of calling the Jews back together, a rally call, When they got stuck on their lineage going back to Adam and Eve they failed to reconstruct their past perfectly, thus the confusion. Noah's Ark was simply a way to move forward and get out of the conundrum of solving their lineage back to Adam. Don't believe?
I said this gets crazy.

OK! here are some scriptures: Notice in Gen, 5:3- Adam is 130 years old when he had his third son Seth. 130 years to have 3 kids! That's not very fruitful and multiplying. Where did all the girls come from in the land of Nod and all before the only third son is born? Think about it; Cain got married before his third brother was born, where did they come from?

If- Cain is a fugitive and vagabond, a curse, especially his curse, then how does a fugitive and vagabond build a city; Gen, 4:17. This is not the life of a fugitive.

Like the Jews in 500 BC, I too am in a hurry, and must move on.
Is it possible that Cain and Able were half brothers? Why do you suppose Cain killed Able? Maybe its because Able kept teasing Cain about him being "half bread". Eve had relations outside of her kind, race, or family, before anyone else- including Adam, and as a result; Cain. Cain went to the land of Nod because that is where his real father is from.
Just a thought! Something different! Christ is Lord and Master of life.

Hope you find an answer that works for you.

Peace.......

In Jewish genealogies grandsons were often reckoned as sons. See Laban (Gen 29:5), Mephibosheth (2 Sam 19:24), and those of Judah (1 Chron 4:1-4), in which list only the first named is his actual son. It is assumed that the reader is acquainted with Genesis and will supply the needed links in this brief record.

Enoch is the father of Cainan (Kainan), Canaan is the son of Ham

Luke gives the genealogy of Mary and begins with Nathan. All names are not pronounced or spelled the same, (Hebrew to Greek) however, each (Matthew and Luke) are 42 generations.
6 Seasons. The last season, (49th generation), 7th is for rest or harvest
