Don't get one get a checking account and use your debit/credit card...credit cards get you in trouble plus you end up spending more money, save your self the money it's too hard to come by!
You can use your debit check card anywhere that you can use a credit card, the only difference is you don't have a monthly bill you have to have it in your account...and you don't get charged interest and late fees over the limit fees all that crap.

If you want something to give you good credit, try American Express. They make you pay off the balance every month, so you don't build up a huge debt, but you still get all of the benefits of a credit card. Try not to get more than one because you will end up maxing them all out and then you won't be able to afford to make the payments. Also, remember that even though it feels like you're not really paying for something at the time, it actually will cost you more in the long run when you add in interest. Use it to buy what you need and then make sure that you pay it off withing the no interest period (usually 28-30 days)!

You might want to research it yourself. Just go to their websites and read their rates and terms etc. Just be aware that as a first timer, you will get the worst rates known to man. Also, be VERY careful when spending on your card. Make sure you have the money to pay it off at the end of every month or your debt will build and you'll be screwed. In a matter of about 1 year, I managed to build my debt to about $4000. And that's probably pretty low compared to some people. Stay with low limit cards so you don't have a chance to over spend. Be careful!

I wouldn't say don't get one though. It's a good way to establish credit. WIthout credit you will have a hard time getting loans when you want to buy cars or houses later.

Just be very very very careful tht you don't over spend. Lenders will look at your credit history and if your debt is too high you might have a problem. Or if you make too many late payments. But it's also a problem if you don't have anything on your credit history. They won'tknow if you can be trusted to repay the loan. If you show that you can be responsible with credit, you will be more likely to get a loan with a better rate. Good luck!

In the Philippines, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted than any other credit card. Just becareful in using your credit card. Some people would no longer notice that they have already max out their credit card and have fallen in debt for the rest of their lives! Always pay more or double the minimum payment indicated in your credit card billing. If you only pay the minimum amount, you are only paying the interest and not your debt. Do not be easily swayed by offers for credit card loans at minimum interest rates. Most of these have hidden charges. Get financial advise to avoid falling into credit card debts. Rule of thumb: Never spend more than what you earn! In your case, use your credit card for real emergencies.

There are a handfull of good rewards credit cards for students. (e.g. the Citi mtvU card)

(The best credit card strategy is to get a good rewards card, use it to buy all your normal stuff, pay off your balance every month to avoid interest and fees, and then enjoy the rewards.)

To quickly see which student rewards credit card will pay you the most rewards for *your* spending profile, check out the rewards calculator at http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/?card_type=College+Student .
