I do not belive any dog should be banned. It is all in the owner.
They were talking about banning rottweilers too....My two males are awesome. A kid even took a bone that had meat on it, out of one of them's mouth and walked away... the dog simply got up, tail wagging and followed him and waiting for him to give it back to him.

I raised my dogs right. But you must also be responsible and not leave children alone with an animal.

If we ban pit bulls then we should also ban stupid people because they are ultimately the cause of pit bull attacks. Lack of training, improper training (agressive) all lead to aggressive dogs that bite. Helen Keller had a pit bull, you all remember hearing about her right? Deaf, blind... do you really think that if pit bulls were aggressive by nature that the dog would have hesitated for more than a second before attacking??? The dog on the Little rascals TV show.. PIT BULL... he played with a group of kids, I don't remember hearing that Spanky had to go to the hospital for stitches because the dog bit it. Its the people that own these dogs and think its cool to have a "guard dog" thats mean that cause the problem. They are just a dog. If you train a Pomerania the same way it can display the same behaviour but 1) no one wants an attack Pomerania, its not "cool" and 2) the Pom's mouth isn't as strong as a Pit Bulls. Its not the dog's fault that his/her owner didn't anticapate the fact that the dog can kill with a bit as opposed to the Pom that will maybe break the skin and be that much more diligent with postive training to raise a well behaved dog. A proper enclosure is also a must. These are not dogs that should be let out to roam (nor is any dog in my opinion)
We also need to be parents to our children. A number (not all I realize) of the bites were on children who were running around playing outside WITH the dog. Dogs don't know what is happening. How often have you seen a child running and a small dog following nipping at its heels, now pretend that was a pit bull doing the same thing... is the light turning on yet?

Consider THIS: some people are too irresponsible to make safe drivers. They drive way over the speed limit, drive while intoxicated, and have little regard for the safety of other drivers and passengers. As a result, hundreds of THOUSANDS of people in the US alone are killed or injured in car crashes, and those of us who are safe and responsible drivers have to pay much higher insurance premiums to compensate for the damage caused by the irresponsible drivers.

Does this mean that cars, trucks, SUV's and motorcycles should be banned? Take a moment to think about the analogy I just made, with the Pit Bull situation. Far more people will die, or be injured, in automobile crashes, than in all the dog attacks, by every dog breed, combined. So, what's the real issue-dangerous cars/dog breeds, or irresponsible, careless and sometimes intentionally-violent PEOPLE? If all the Pit Bulls just vanished overnight, does anyone think that the bad owners, the drug dealers and the people who get a thrill from watching two animals tear each other apart, or from having something that so many other people fear(and face it-many people don't know the difference between "fear" and "respect" these days) will just go away, too?

The pitbull depends on the owner. Bullies are lovers, but if they're raised as fighters, then that's all they'll know. I know plenty of pitbulls that are loving to not only people but also other dogs and smaller pets. They're very loyal, and therefore protective. No one should be afraid to take on a bully breed, unless it is perhaps a rescue that has a fighters background. Believe me, there are still jerks out there that raise them for fighting to make money. Many of them, even if saved, have to be put down because they never learned to be kind. The bully depends on the owner, but some owners can be idiots.

I don't think any dog should be banned anywhere.
But I truly wish there was a universal law that people must take an I.Q.test to determine whether they had the sense to care for a dog. Also forcing anyone registering an animal to have a certain amount of schooling on dog or cat behavior and training.
But that's just me.
If I were Queen of the World every child would have a puppy or kitten to raise. The kids would have to prove they had successfully raised a well mannered, happy, healthy ,mentally stable animal.Had provided it with everything it needed from the day they got it until it died.Only then could they themselves have children.Because how we raise and treat our animals truly does reflect how we care for our children.
Banning any animal won't solve the problem.

No.

I've never met a more friendly, loving, or playful dog than my pitbull, Dani. Not only does she LOVE kids, she adores other dogs, small ones especially. She is the biggest sissy, ever.

With ANY dog, it's how they're raised that determines their temperment. Pitbulls raised in a good environment, that allows them to be exposed to many different types of people and dogs, turn into wonderful pets. No matter what the species, if they're taught to, they WILL be mean. Pitbulls get a bad wrap because they're SO forceful, they are usually PURE muscle, which makes people so inclined to fight them or make them into vicious guard dogs.

NO! They are beautiful dogs! Not all of them are mean, and the ones that are are either bred to be that way or people make them that way. My ex boyfriend has 2 pitbulls and they are the most loving dogs in the world. So no, they shouldn't be banned from the U.S.
Just for a reference, it would almost be like banning, people from Iraq and Iran just because we refer to them as "terrorists".

Absolutely NOT, irresponsible pitbull owners should!!! These animals are bred for a specific reason BUT any owner who cannot or will not handle his animal responsibly should be banned from owning it.

NO!!!! I work at a vet's office and I volunteer at the local humane society and I have a pit bull puppy. They are not born mean...their owner's make them this way. Granted they do have that gene, but so do lots of other breeds. If you are a responsible pet owner, which means you socialize and train your dog properly and also take the time to learn about the breed, you will have a wonderful, loving pet. I agree it is the owners of these vicious pets who should be banned and worse!

Why don't we ask this ? instead. Should we ban people who fight, do we ban people who kill, do we ban people who don't get along with other people, they go on and on.... Ask yourself that question. Then think why we should punish our children when they do wrong and maybe just maybe we will not have as much killings and all.. Think about that and then ask yourself if we should BAN a dog because a owner doesn't know how to act and they get a kick out of watching a DOG FIGHT!!!! I say NO ban the people!!!
