Yes you do because you have to have either a GED or high school diploma in order to get into a college. Therefore, you can't get student financial aid unless you are a student.

Well, yes, you need something *like* a GED, but GEDs and diplomas aren't your only options.

According to federal regulations, in order to receive financial aid, you must be deemed "qualified to study at the postsecondary level," which means that you must have...

* a high school diploma;
* the recognized equivalent of a high school diploma, typically a general education development or GED certificate;
* completed home schooling at the secondary level; or
* passed a Department-approved ability-to-benefit test.

Now, the "equivalent of a high school diploma" could be one of several things. Some states have an examination that you can take which they will recognize as the equivalent of a diploma. You might also be able to supply your school with an academic transcript showing that you have successfully completed at least a two-year program that is acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor’s degree (like an Associate's degree). You will need to check with your prospective school to see what they accept in this area.

If you don't have a GED, it sounds like an ability to benefit test (ABT) might be your best bet. ABT is just a fancy way of referring to written tests that measure reading, writing, and numerical skills. You can get a list of these tests here: http://www.ed.gov/legislation/FedRegister/other/2004-2/051104b.html. Again, make sure that you check with your school(s) to see what tests (if any) they accept.

Yes. You need to be accepted into a college to receive financial aid and to be accepted into a degree program you need to have your GED or high school diploma. If cost of getting your GED is an issue there are probably programs in your area to offer them at almost no cost.

I would imagine that you either have to have your high school diploma or ged to get financial aid for furthering your education.
